Patrick Vieira

Set to take over as U21 boss from June 1st.

Looking forward to seeing what he can do and he certainly has the right background for it. For too long the EDS has faltered, if we are looking toward creating a Barcelonaesque footballing philosophy throughout all levels of the club then could he potentially be seen as a future first team manager?

Really pleased about this. If pellegrin is being given 2 year contract, could they be lining up paddy to be promoted from within? Sounds like a plan to me.

Quite likely.

Possible alternative to Pep.

Great to see the EDS being taken seriously at last.

Manchester City Football Club is delighted to announce Patrick Vieira as the new Head of the Elite Development Squad, a position he will take up on 1 June, following two years in the role as City’s Football Development Executive.

The Elite Development Squad currently play in the Under 21 Premier League and from 2014 will be based at the City Football Academy, City’s groundbreaking training ground development, which is currently under construction on an 80 acre site adjacent to the Etihad Stadium.

Vieira’s illustrious playing career includes the winning of five FA Cups and nine league titles. His 107 caps for France include winning performances in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2000 UEFA European Championships. His time as a Manchester City player, which began in January 2010, concluded with the winning of the FA Cup Final in May 2011, the Club’s first silverware in 35 years.

During his two years in his current role, the Club has supported Patrick in his coaching development which resulting in him securing his UEFA B coaching licence last year, an achievement on which he continues to build as he works to secure his UEFA A licence.

Patrick Vieira said: “After spending two years working across a number of areas of the Club and with a particular focus on the Youth Academy, I feel honoured and privileged to have been offered this role. This marks a new chapter both in my career and in my life and I am looking forward to it immensely. My passion for the development of young talent has only grown in my time at City and I am pleased to be able to play my part in helping to shape the footballing future for Manchester City.”

Ferran Soriano said: “Patrick is a world champion and it is a great honour that he has chosen Manchester City to begin his football management career. I have seen him carefully considering options and choosing to coach for the best reasons; he has a love of the game and a willingness to continue to learn and transmit his knowledge and experience to young footballers.”

“Patrick’s role is of the highest long term importance for the Club. The ability of the Academy, the Elite Development Squad and the First team to work together using the same football concepts is key to our success and sustainability.”

Manchester City would like to offer their best wishes to Attilio Lombardo, who stepped down from this role, and to thank him for his work with the EDS over the last year.

I think this is a great bit of business. I know he is already at our club, but to have him in charge of the youngsters and hopefully the youngsters that come in can only mean good things.

He will be able to coach them as athletes, but their mental attitudes as well.

Got to be a great draw in attracting some of the worlds best youngsters as well, what footballer worth his salt wouldn't want to learn his trade from a true world great like Vieira?

From being down about losing the FA Cup and Bobby leaving, this news coupled with the imminent appointment of Pellegrini and some of the genuine class players we are being linked to over the summer has got me feeling very positive about the next few years.

Roll on next season!

Nice roll for him and think he could do wonders developing the EDS lads and hopefully Pellgreni will bring some of these kids through or at least give them chances in the games against the lesser teams in the league. Seems very happy with his appointment too. Kids will aspire to him me thinks!

This is a huge moment for the club, this shows the intent to both youth development and Patrick Veira. You can see the similarity and what they are trying to build like the Barcelona model.

Coach the kids and when they are ready as players so will Patrick. I don't expect many loan deals now for our kids as they will want the kids to get the best daily coaching in the City way.

Really great news and this gives me heart for the long term dominance of English football. Under Mancini I worried about the constant "please sir can I have more" rather than utilising what he had and had bought and bringing the best out in them and also the kids being brought through.

A good start to the bright new era!

Top news Patrick Patrick is a very impressive person and I rate he will make a fantastic coach.
As he has been in England so long IF he ever becomes the first team manager will he be counted as homegrown?

I'm delighted with that Vieira news, he's been a positive influence around the place since he came both as a player and 'ambassador'.

Great appointment.
