Martinez quits as Everton Approach Whelan for pemission

Finally.......

Didn't see it anywhere else........

Roberto resigns: Martinez leaves relegated Wigan as Everton prepare to pounce - but chairman Whelan wants £2m compensation

Roberto Martinez has resigned as manager of Wigan and will be free to take the vacant job at Everton.

The Toffees made an approach late last week for the Spaniard and at an emotional lunchtime meeting on Tuesday, Martinez told Wigan chairman Dave Whelan he was quitting.

He spent time making his mind up over the Bank Holiday weekend while visiting family in Barcelona and now Whelan will seek £2million compensation from his new employers.

Martinez has turned down Liverpool and Aston Villa in the past and is now likely to replace David Moyes, who has moved to Manchester United.

Martinez bows out an FA Cup winner but became the first manager to be relegated from the Barclays Premier League and win the famous trophy in the same season.

Wigan are generally seen to have overachieved during their eight-year spell in the Premier League, and Martinez was given credit for getting the most out of a limited squad.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said his Everton counterpart, Bill Kenwright, had rung him on Friday to ask for permission to speak to Roberto Martinez about succeeding David Moyes.

Whelan told BBC Radio 5Live: 'Roberto and I had a meeting on Friday and he wanted the weekend to think about it.

'He has resigned. We're going to release him but he has another 12 months on his contract so we would want that taking care of from whatever clubs wants to take him.

'Will that club need to buy out his contract? Yes.

'Roberto, being who he is and what he is, is very respectful and we have been friends for a very long time.

'He just feels he's not equipped to take Wigan back to the Premier League after winning the FA Cup and getting relegated, which was such a blow - to him, me and all our supporters. I accepted what he's saying.

'The Everton chairman rang me on Friday and asked for permission to talk to him. I did tell him (Roberto) about that. He is aware Everton have got permission to talk to him.

'I would just say he's a must for Everton. He's a fabulous manager; a very honest person who plays football the right way, from back to front. He's just tailor-made for Everton. I am sure Bill Kenwright will be very, very interested now.'

Whelan also told Wigan Today: 'Roberto felt it was in the best interests of him and the club for him to go.

'He wanted permission to move so I've given that. He feels he's not the man to lead us back into the Premier League.

'I've got to accept what he feels. He loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job.

'Everton asked for permission to speak to Roberto last Thursday. I told them to wait until I had spoken to Roberto today.

'Roberto still had 12 months remaining on his contract and that will need buying out.'

Beat me to it Ted lol. Seriously can see that happening, I'm not naive enough to think the rags will drop away, but can see them not being as prominent as they have.

Martinez should pass on everton and wait for a big club to come calling. I believe Stoke need a new manager....

I note your humourous tone, but I actually think he isn't a great fit for Everton.

The current Everton squad got much bigger potential of playing Martinez like football than the Stoke one does, though ...

I'm actually quite intrigued about this move. One manager who allegedly has over performed takes over after another who has. One of them is bound to be found out ...

That makes sense. But I'm sure he needs different players than Everton have to play proper football.
Stoke was never a real option

All teams who are relegated get 60 million pounds over four years to manage the transition from PL to Championship. Wigan are part of the financial upper layer of the English football league. Had they been relegated last season it would have been another matter but now they have some sort of financial edge that will help them get back up again.

They're sort of secure anyway. Anything can happen though.

I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

The difference wasn't That big (relegation last year as opposed to relegation now). Percentage wise yes, and I'm not saying the extra 7million isn't big money in the championship but all the relegated teams from 11/12 season had the "same" advantage.

With wise use of money they are secure but I still can see a decline for Wigan in the coming years.parachute money or not

It would be. But I won't be happy if the latter part also means that Gollum takes his winning record vs us with him to the swamp!

Agreed. Their style will take some changing and more than half of their first-choice players are over 30. They won't be changing their spots any time soon.

If he also takes their finishing position with him, I'll settle for it.
