Unequal encounters

Bert's death last week got me thinking about how soft some modern footballers are. Last season there was Ferguson getting typically hysterical about Van Persie being hit by a ball ("he could have been killed.") How I'd have loved to see Bert Trautmann come up against rvp going for a high ball into the penalty area, rvp would have been a foot under the mud while Bert was throwing the ball upfield. Any other men vs boys mis-matches you can think of?

Good shout Bert. I'd temporarily forgotten what an obnoxious little twat Macari was.

The thing if there was as much money in the game back then as there is now. Footballers wouldn't be any different.

To be fair to Van Prannock, it was Bacon doing the whining and making the embarrassing remarks.

I always remember Shaun Wright-Phillips' debut away at Port Vale. A few minutes after coming on, he had been clattered a few times and got the ball in the box - his only route round 6ft god knows how much Antony Gardner was to knock it through his legs and he actually tried to crawl through his legs after the ball

Francis Lee (Derby versus a very young Colin Barrett (City).

Frannie began to tell Barrett a joke during the game, whilst delaying the punchline until young Colin had been dragged out of his position in the centre and out towards the wing, leaving a huge defensive hole in the middle.....Derby (Archie Gemmel I think) swept thro the gap and scored.

Colin Barrett...lesson learned.
