Being a little harsh at times, I tend not to have a very high opinion of the man. He seems to polarise opinion into the 2 camps roughly described below. I fall into camp 2 - am I being too harsh?

Opinion 1: Gazza was once a superstar who liked a drink, which could cause him to be erratic at times. Despite several attempts at management he was forced to leave the game and has become ill, an illness which he is unable to shake off despite several attempts - he goes out drinking to excess periodically and makes a fool of himself and can be a danger to people around him. He needs a lot more help from people to get him over this illness and protect his family.

Opinion 2: Gazza was once a superstar who liked a drink. He is and always was a pisshead, one of those people who shouldn't drink because they cant handle it and just do stupid things - we all know someone like that. Once he had the likes of Bobby Robson to guide and protect. And his abilities as a footballer to save him from consequences a normal person would face. He had several goes at management, failed lamentably and quickly due to - allegedly - a fondness for a quick pint. Gazza is still a pisshead. He turns up at the odd police siege with a Maccy D for a raving nutter, he hits people at railway stations and gets periodically arrested. He is a man that shouldn't drink because it makes him stupid - just like he was when he was 19. No illlness has overtaken him - he doesn't drink all the time, just now and again. Several friends and the PFA have put a lot of money into getting him to kick the habit - but he cant or wont. He is one of those twats in life we all know of in our own town - but because of his former stardom he seems to get huge public sympathy. He needs to pull himself together and get a grip.

Two extreme views there when the truth is probably somewhere in the middle in that he is ill, but his 'illness' is probably not the addiction that we would all naturally assume

I know we've had the 'depression is fake' bollocks on here recently, but alcohol abuse and / or dependency is for me not an illness, but a symptom of some other mental problem.

The lad has just never really been able to grow up, and as a result probably still has the mentality of a 16 year old which lends itself to a lack of self control.

I've got some sympathy for him as a person whose talents I really admired, but more than anything I just feel pity now when I see his exploits.

I'd go with pity as well. It's horrible what he's done to himself and from some of the ridiculous stories we hear about how footballers are coddled that it's a bit of a surprise it doesn't happen to more of them once the attention goes away.

Gazza's a gonner along with Sinclair and Suarez it seems.

Barry & Sinclair left out of Manchester City squad to face Arsenal

The duo have been left out of the club's pre-season trip to Helsinki along with youngster Denis Suarez, though Manuel Pellegrini has not yet received any bids for the players

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Gareth Barry and Scott Sinclair have been left out of his side’s trip to Helsinki.

City face Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki on Saturday but neither the duo nor highly-rated 19-year-old Denis Suarez have made the trip with the rest of Pellegrini’s squad.
Asked if they are on the verge of a move away, the Chilean said: “We’ll see next week. Scott Sinclair is not here with the squad.
“Scott is in Manchester. Denis Suarez, Gareth Barry and Scott Sinclair are in Manchester.”
Sinclair has been linked with a transfer this summer but City are yet to receive a bid for the 24-year-old, while Suarez is reportedly a target for Barcelona.
Barry’s future is also uncertain and Goal understands that, with the midfielder in the final year of his contract, Pellegrini has already indicated directly that he wishes to keep him as a squad player.
But the England midfielder would like the security of an additional year or is ready to quit on a free transfer next summer.

Option 3: Who gives a fuck.

Fucking wife beater is what he is. Only thing lower than that are paedo's.

He was amazingly talented footballer who I loved to watch very much. So what. What he is now is what matters.

Same road as Best, awkward socially he needed that acceptance and the jokes and stupidity were one way - without those he needed drink to be able to function in the social circles he found himself in, like a miner turning up to the The Queens birthday ball - out of his depth.

And then it was dependancy on drink, like Best he threw away an amazing talent ended up with someone attracted to that 'wild side' persona he pretended he had and couldn't keep the pretence without drink.

He'll die the same as Best, the same as Ollie Reed with a last drink coursing through his system , his internal organs will shut down and he'll be unable to control his bladder or bowels.

Sad waste of such talent.
