Pablo Zabaleta has committed his long term future to City by signing a new four-year contract which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2017.

The defender, who was voted Etihad Player of the Year for 2012/13, joined the Blues in 2008 from Espanyol and has gone on to make 175 appearances for the club.


“I have been here for five years and it feels like home. Signing a contract extension with the club makes me feel very happy,” Zabaleta revealed.

The defender agreed the new deal on the eve of City’s Premier League opener against Newcastle, and Zaba aims to help the Blues to success in the 2013/14 campaign.

“I think we have got a great squad, fantastic players and hopefully we can win something this year,” he declared.

Speaking of his relationship with the City fans, the Argentine added: “I am sure the fans will respond very well as always. They are a big support for the team week in week out, and hopefully at the end of the season the fans and players can celebrate with a trophy.”

I remember him having a nightmare on his debut, getting torn apart v Chelsea and I thought 'oh great, another fullback who can't defend'.

Since then he's just kept on improving, turned into a reliable right back and good cover and carried on improving to arguably a world class right back. Great at defending and has tremendous energy and stamina to bomb forward.

He really does bleed blue. My favorite moment of his was how he flew back home from Argentina when his dad was very ill and played a stormer in the FA Cup Semi final vs the Rags.

He's one of those players that you know is really passionate about the club and translates that passion on the pitch every time he throws on the jersey.

Really pleased with this news. Zabs is one of my favourite players - great talent combined with a superb work rate. He strikes me as a real gentleman and the sort of player who deserves to do well. ...and he scored the opener vs QPR so Tyler could use his infamous Z to A line when Aguero got THAT winner! ;-)
