free kicks inside the penalty area

I cant remember the last time I saw one in a game. Have the rules changed so its an automatic penalty these days?

Just watching BT sport channel and they are showing premier league goals and one was a free kick inside the area and it just made me think I haven't seen one in a very long time.

If my memory serves me right the used to be given for obstruction.

Anyone any idea of the rules have been changed regarding this? Or when they last saw one given?

only thing I've seen them given for over the last few seasons is a goal keeper picking up a back pass. Strictly, obstruction should be an indirect free kick, but how many times do you see obstruction given anywhere?

I think the rules on obstruction changed about 6-8 years ago.

One thing I've noticed in a similar vein is there seem to be a lot more drop balls in the game nowadays.

Forgot about the keeper picking it up. Thanks for that.

I never knew the rule changed regarding obstruction. Only been coaching for 10 years lol. Must get out of this drunk tank.

You've talked it up - there's been a free kick awarded to Celtic in the penalty area for a back pass at the san siro against AC tonight.

Hit the wall

I barked at a ref about this earlier this season and he gave one.

Called a high foot on one of my lads Nd pointed to the spot. After I kindly informed him that it should be an indirect free kick and asked if he knew the rules he relented.

Where was his foot in relation to your player?

Haha

My player was clearing a cross. Gave them a pen.

He was in his own box and a player attacking was deemed close enough for the clearance to be done with a high boot

Bit like Edin in the Pilsner Urquell game where we all thought he should've scored but he had a defender's boot in his face. Should that not have been a pen for dangerous play??

I'm no ref so don't quote me, but my understanding is that any foul that would result in an Indirect free kick outside the box is an indirect free kick inside the box.

High foot isn't dangerous play, necessarily

In the most recent Olympic Games Women's Soccer semi finals, the referee awarded a free kick inside the penalty area because the Canadian goalie held on to the ball too long. The free resulted in a strange penalty when the US kicker smashed the ball against a Canadian defender from almost point blank and it hit her on the elbow. US went on to win the match. Needless to say there was uproar. But apparently the rules permit the ref to make that call, even though no ref has used it in recent times.
