Manchester City's players and coaching staff have put their hands in their own pockets - to help pay for tickets for away games.

In an unprecedented move Manuel Pellegrini, his players and coaches have each shelled out a figure - believed to be around £1,000 - so the club can offer half price tickets to season ticket holders at selected matches throughout the campaign.

It is understood that the games furthest away or matches that take place within a few days of each other will be prioritised.

The Blues, along with other Premier League clubs, set aside £200,000 to improve experiences at away matches for supporters.

Yesterday United announced they would use the money to knock £4 off the cost of tickets at matches on the road.

But City would appear to have taken things further with a five-figure sum added to the £200,000 from first-team players and coaching staff.

The Blues have also not stopped there - away areas at their Etihad Stadium are about to revamped to make the experience more pleasurable for visiting fans.

It is understood highlights on concourse screen will focus on the away side and catering staff could be kitted out in the colours of City's opposition.

Tom Glick, chief commercial and operating officer said: “Manchester City fans are famous for their fiercely loyal and vocal support. They have stuck with the club through thick and thin for generations, and both the club and players want to say thank you.”

Skipper Vincent Kompany, one of those to make a donation, added: “In my opinion, our away support is the best in the Premier League and we never take that for granted.

“Win, lose or draw, City supporters can always be heard throughout our games and I just hope that this initiative proves just how much we value this incredible."

It's gestures like these that make our club stand out from the rest - most of the gutter press will try their best to ignore it but we know and although only a splash in the ocean for each player it's the fact that they realise the tremendous support they receive at away game and how people really need to scrimp and save to cover the costs that makes this a tremendous gesture!

Well done City and all the players!

Great idea but would have been better to refund all losing away games rather than half price a few. Probably would be cheaper for city and make loyal traveling fans feel the team will reward them each time they fail to perform.

They've only put £1,000 in each, at the current away form that won't be anywhere near enough!

Someone on twitter raised the point that it's the players sky high wage demands that have made ticket prices so high in the first place.
Don't get me wrong with the above comment i really think it's a great gesture by the player's and club.

Re. The players' high wages: I would imagine it's a vicious circle spiralled by supply and demand over the years by agents and bidding wars between clubs. Are players' remunerations, in general, regulated in any way by football regulatory bodies, and if not, should they be? Honest question as I have no idea, maybe someone with more insight can shed some light on this. Kudos to the players and other personnel for this gesture of giving back. I can bet though that a similar effort by the rags would receive way more acclaim from the media.

Maybe nothing to the players in terms of money but 'it's the thought that counts'. I appreciate the gesture

Shrek frequently puts his hand in his pockets when he plays away.

But this is away tickets and we have no say in the prices given. WHU for example are a fucking ripoff. I take offence at anyone saying its our players wage demands. We all know our home ticket prices are the envy of other clubs.

Very nice gesture, I would like to know who instigated it though.

Wigan and Blackburn were also extortionate until City and rag fans boycotted the games and they dropped the prices, yet I doubt they were the highest payers. Arsenal's are also ridiculous, yet they apparently pay low wages compared to everyone else. So yes, players wages come into it, but not as much as the greed of the clubs themselves.

Greed is the very thing spoiling football.
