Adverts on the Site

Posted this in 'Ask the Lads', but didn't get a response yet.

What's the deal with the adverts on the site between posts? Is this going to be a permanent thing, or some error that's going to be rectified, or is it a problem with the computer I'm using at the moment?

Don't know about 'The Lads' but I don't see any adverts mate and I'm pretty sure we donate to the site to ensure we don't need them.

I'm on the 'Away' preference so just changed it over and can't see any issues. Sounds like you may have an issue there mate, you been wading through something you shouldn't have or done a download recently?

There should be no adverts ever on this site?

Nope. It's only been like this (or I've only noticed it) today, and the adverts seem to be embedded in the site, rather than pop-ups or anything, which would suggest (to a person with my limited technical knowledge, at least) that it's a site-related, rather than computer-related, issue. I'll try with my laptop after the weekend to see if that's any different.

That's exactly what I thought, but look at the screenshot I posted above.

If it was a site issue then we'd all be seeing it, I think. I'm sure there'll be one of the guru's over soon to check it over.

Which browser are you using?

I had something vaguely similar happen to me a few months back. A lot of normal text turned into clickable links to adverts.
It turned out that it was some adware that had sneaked its way past my internet security. It was visible as an extension to Google Chrome, so I could easily disable it from Tool\Extensions.

Not if it's country or region specific. Here, we have adverts all over BBC's pages, too...

The BBC are allowed to take adverts on their website, certainly outside the UK

I noticed that the other day, wondered why they were allowed to advertise but as you state, if it's outside of the UK then there's probably no issue.

I know. That's what I was saying. There is obviously some tool somewhere out there that makes websites able to differentiate the countries or regions which do and don't get adverts. If the website's hosts have altered some configurations, then this could, theoretically at least, be one avenue to check out.

Nool- already checked, nothing from the computer (Chrome, Windows 7), it seems. Like I said, I'll check on monday for certain whether it is an issue specific to this computer, or if it affects the other one I also use.

It says 'Ads not by this Site', meaning the site is not responsible for the ads chosen for display in the advertising spaces it provides.

I haven't noticed the Ads at all so far today, and have not made any adjustments to my computer, so I assume it was an issue with the site, or the site's hosts. Where's the money, lads? ;)
