supporting a prem team because yours is in a lower division

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

supporting a prem team because yours is in a lower division

Postby Wonderwall » Wed Oct 30, 2013 1:12 pm

I am currently in london on business for a couple of days and have just had a long conversation with a lad from Middlesbrough. He works for my company and moved down to london two years ago. He told me he supported Chelsea? I asked why as he was from Middlesbrough? He said he was always and still is a boro fan but as they are in the championship he decided to start supporting Chelsea because they are a premiership team. I asked him if he goes to the game and he said no... I said all the usual stuff about being a city fan, 3rd tier and never wavered from my love of all things city blah blah. He just doesnt get it? I said what would you do if ambramovic decided to ditch it and move on and chelsea got relegated. He said, that will never happen....but he likes the way arsenal play as well. ..

Last time I will bother with him.

Very sad but true fact of life. This is worse than glory hunters. At least they only follow one team.

I kinda do this in reverse. Have Macc Town as a 2nd team as i went to school there. Dont go to games or anything but theirs is the result i look for next

I have an irish workmate who supports Chelsea and the Scum. He likes whoever plays good football but still gives out stick when City lose. I tell him to pick a team and stick with it for 30+ years before he talks to me about football again.

Sounds like a typical rag fan - perhaps it is a sign of their (hopefully) impending demise that such shallow people look elsewhere when in the past the scum were the natural focus for their 'loyalty'.

Spot on.

Another similar thing is the amount of people professing to be Barca fans now, the very same people who were Real fans when Beckham went there.

As for him giving you stick, Id pity him as he doesnt have the faintest idea what it is like to truly support and live/die with your team each week. That is a privilige granted to true fans of a football club, whatever division they may be in, and never experienced by the armchair band wagon jumpers described above.

Shallow is exactly what they are. I would imagine we have attracted many of these types of people over the last 3 seasons. Theres a few clubs i like to see do well and they are all championship or lower. But i'm only a fan of City and when they lose it hurts. I don't feel like that about any other club. I'm sure many of you are like this. It wouldn't matter if we where a non league team in 10 years, i would still be a fan and still goto games.

Loads of Brighton fans down our neck of the woods "support" other teams, notably the scum and the chavs. Got bored of asking who they'd support when they played each other.......untermensch

A good friend of mine supports two teams. Bromley and Crystal Palace.

Bromley because that's where he was raised and Palace because when he was younger they were his local 'big team' and he wanted to go and watch some top flight football. He's been attending Bromley games for absolutely years, likewise with Palace. Complete loyalty to both and both in very different worlds.

In my opinion that's totally fair enough and I can see how and why he does that.

Yeah, I got it :-)

The Dutch are a little bit like that as well. They have one Dutch team, but for foreign leagues it's mostly about who plays the best football or where the Dutch starts are playing.
