Atletico Madrid

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Atletico Madrid

Postby Mikhail Chigorin » Wed Oct 30, 2013 3:00 pm

I've always thought of Atletico Madrid as being a 'proper' footballing club, unfortunately condemned to live in the shadows of their overbearing and obnoxious neighbours.

However, Atletico are currently occupying second spot in La Liga with Team Tranaldo in third place and possibly starting to look over their shoulders at the teams below them, who might, conceivably, be breathing down their necks.

I don't know what sort of football Atletico are producing at the moment and whether, or not, they have the capability to maintain this position to the end of the season, although to my mind it would be great if they could.

Perhaps those on the Forum who are Spanish football watchers, or are better informed than I am, would care to cast their thoughts as to how things might end up for Atletico, as I find this situation rather intriguing. It might also suggest that the sale of Ozil to Arsenal might have been a substantial miscalculation.

Athletico have been producing some good stuff for a few years now. I wouldnt mind their cheif scout though, he has done some great business with strikers down the years.

I too hope they break the top monotony in la liga.

Quality side, Good system of play, they look like us in our League winning season. The manager is doing a great job despite selling his mega star Centre forward. One to watch or avoid in The Chumps,

Diego Costa has bagged 13 in 13 this season.

I love Atleti. They're my team in Spain. Just like last season, however, they'll definitely finish on the top three but definitely won't finish in the top two.

Is this because they don't have a big enough squad with the requisite quality throughout, or are they currently playing out of their skins and won't be able to sustain this level for a full season, or are there other possible reasons which don't immediately suggest themselves ??

I think people who have some romantic idea that Athletico are some bastion of rightousness should read about some of their history.

They had a guy called Jesús Gil as their chairman for a good time, they changed their name to Atlético Aviación to please Franco.

Also there is this point of view:

The money they got for Falcao was huge for them. They were able to get Villa, Gregory vdW, and a center half with plenty to spare. Plus they flipped Demichellis to us for a 3.5m profit. Now, with this money (they're rumored to be in for Kagawa and Podolski), they've been able to strengthen and challenge the top 2 in their league. And Simeone is a very good manager.

They're a dark horse in the CL and legit contenders for La Liga. Or at least I think so.

oh ok so blaming a club now and the people that run it for mistakes over 50/60 years ago is intelligent? Might as well hate germans for the wars then too.
