I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now as he was playing CB.

I will pay extra attention to him tonight, especially what he does off the ball, interceptions etc. and see what I am missing

Slightly related, I read Alonso's contract is up in the summer. I know he's getting on a bit now but he could be a Pirlo for us for a couple of seasons maybe.

Nope, Alonso joined at the start of Pellegrini's first and only season in charge. (probably not his signing though)
