Sascha Riether charged by the FA after 'stamp' on Adnan Januzaj

Fulham's Sascha Riether has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after appearing to stamp on Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj.

The incident in Fulham's 3-1 home defeat on Saturday was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

The defender, 30, has until 1800 GMT on 5 November to respond to the charge.

Riether is the first player to be charged retrospectively by the FA under a new pilot project.

Speaking before being made aware of the FA charge, United manager David Moyes called for more protection for his 18-year-old winger.

He said: "Adnan is going to need a little bit of protection or we are going to find that he is getting kicked up and down.

"I do think he deserves a little bit more than he is getting at this present time."

Moyes did confuse the issue when he was asked to clarify his comments.

"It is not a case of asking for protection," he said.

"We are just saying that somewhere along the line, people will need to let the boy, if he is going to keep playing in the fashion and style we want, he is going to have to get some protection from it.

"But we will never ask for any."

Moyes said he has also warned the Belgian about diving as a result of being targeted by heavy tackles.

"We have spoken to him about it," added Moyes. "He gets kicked up and down in training every day. But he gets up.

"Adnan has learned from the good professionals that he has got to get on with it and accept it.

"He only needs to look at Lionel Messi, who is probably the best in the world at getting kicked, getting up and getting on with it and continually producing magic all the time.

"I am not in any way comparing him to Lionel Messi but I am saying we hope the way he gets up after he has been kicked is the way Adnan continues to behave."
