This is more likely. Like the truly class act he is, the captain saw the ship sinking, didn't tell anyway and ran away.

All this talk about how he promised RVP he was going to be there a long time either proves he is a lying cheating bastard or he sold his soul for one more season... well come to think of it, probably both. They will say he left on top and blame Moyes, but in fairness to Gollum, the cupboard is empty, old, overrated youth and dissension is growing.
