Josip Simunic has been given a 10-match ban for pro-fascist chants after Croatia's WC Qualifier Playoff against Iceland by FIFA. These games will include the World Cup.

Well done for once, FIFA.

Good to see them taking action against him - does make a change. But I don't see any mention if anything being done against the fans/fan-base that joined in so again they've hit the 'easy' target but don't have a clue how to handle the situation with the fans doing it - or an I being pedantic?

Sorry I dont know enough about it to comment. What are the words? Was it a Croatian national song way before WWII which just happened to be used by the Ustase or whoever?

Can anyone enlighten us?

If it's just a national ditty I'd rather they concentrate on the blatant and open racism against black players instead of fining them about 2 quid. If the lyrics are indeed promoting massacres etc then fair enough.

It was a chant used in the Second World War to rabble rouse by the pro-Nazi government. No history before that, in the same way as there is no history to 'Sieg Heil' (pretty much its equivalent) prior to the rise of Nazi Party rallies in Germany. It was used during WW2, banned during Yugoslavia, and made legal again upon Croatia's independence (but is now condemned by quite a large portion of society, including many government ministers).

In that case it's a fair ban. But you can probably guarantee the whole stadium will be singing it in their next home match.

Why the fuck would anyone want to sing about being a nazi in the 2nd world war ?

'ah the good old days when we had the shit kicked out of us & my grandad got his leg blown off when the a bomber dropped a full load killing 300 of the local militia, but they was happy times, 'cos in between, we got to persecute some folks & generally behave like cunts.

Eee, if only we could have all that today, instead of living normal lives'

Stupid fucking bastards.

He's Croatian-Australian diaspora, and will have grown up surrounded by Nazi/Ustasha sympathisers.
When he said he was 'unaware of the connotations', that's complete and utter bullshit. If he'd have turned around and said 'Sorry, I wasn't aware that most people in the world don't like Nazis', I might have believed him.

I just don't get why any stupid cunt anywhere aspires to be a nazi. It really hasn't got that much going for it & inevitably ends up with you getting your arse kicked.

Pretty much. Add to that the peculiar diaspora in Australia or South America which included a lot of fascists who fled from communist Yugoslavia & are a lot more open with their Ustasa/Cetnik memorabilia compared to those in Europe (mostly gastarbeiters from the 60s & refugees from the 90s war).

There's a fantastic piece which outlines how the Ustasha & Cetniks, along with Italian & German fascists more or less fought side by side in occupied Split during the 40s. It pretty much directly addresses the imbeciles, who think fascist slogans & gestures go hand in hand with an anti-Serb & anti-Cetnik mindset in particular (and vice versa of course). Seen most recently in stadiums across Croatia after the Simunic drama hit the media. For anyone who's interested & speaks the language.

Fair point - British squaddie in bad fitting sack or slimming, well cut, always fashionable black SS uniform.

i don't really get why he's ever allowed to play again, ever?

if i rolled into work in a Nazi uni and espoused some rhetoric...what would they do? Suspend me for a couple weeks or fire my ass and tell me to go get fucked?

Let him play his Nazi club footy, but the INTL game should be off limits to this cunt forever.
