Mike Keegan: It looks like City were right to go 'holistic ballistic'...
9 Jan 2014 17:26

MEN reporter Mike Keegan believes the Blues have proved the doubters wrong by fully committing to the "holistic" approach touted during the summer.

It was the word that triggered sniggers on sportsdesks around the country.

But eight months after City announced that the successor to Roberto Mancini would bring a 'holistic' approach to the club the only people laughing are the fans, the players - and no doubt the Blues' battle-hardened officials.

At the time many had to thumb through a dictionary to find out what it meant. Even after doing that, some were still not sure.

But Manuel Pellegrini has delivered his own definition of 'holistic' for the nation to see.

It involves a club singing from the same hymn sheet, a team that plays with a smile on its face and a refreshing approach to football that is at odds with what the tabloids would have you believe.

City's decision to go ballistic for holistic will have stemmed not only from the scars of Mancini's divisive administration but from Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain's time at blueprint Barcelona.

Club staff are wary of harking back to the Italian's turbulent tenure. It was not all tears and tantrums and nobody will forget his part in the Blues revival and the glorious ending of the trophy drought.

But it is impossible not to note the differences.

Whereas assistant David Platt was often used as a go-between, the amiable Chilean's door is always open.

The new faces that have arrived have also lifted spirits. One source, in typically Mancunian fashion, described Alvaro Negredo, Fernandinho and co as 'good lads'.

Many may not have seen it, but a glimpse into the new spirit of harmony was provided at the Etihad in the second half of Wednesday's cakewalk against West Ham.

Negredo, having bagged a brilliant hat-trick, was summoned to the bench to be replaced by Aleksandar Kolarov.

Such a move may have prompted a dummy spit from previous centre forwards.

The Hammers, as poor a side as the Blues will face this season, were not so much on the ropes but lying prostrate in the first row of the ringside seats and chances to score four, five and maybe even six would certainly have come Negredo's way.

But the beast was happy to leave the feast. He embraced his replacement and then shook the hand of every member of the bench.

The only way he could have displayed further dedication to the cause would have been if he had vaulted the advertisement hoardings into the South Stand and started a chorus of Blue Moon.
Off the pitch, the definition of holistic is all around us.

Gone is the noisy neighbours tag. The transfer window is open and there has hardly been a peep out of City.

Sky Sports no longer have a van parked outside the main entrance, just in case.

Paparazzi poised at the Bridgewater Hospital on Princess Parkway will no doubt have been briefed to look out for United targets.

Pellegrini did his business in the summer, and with Sergio Aguero to return and Stevan Jovetic to hopefully prove that he is not the Invisible Man the Blues faithful often sing about, all seems rosy.

The Jovetic situation itself is another reminder of how things have changed.

Perhaps desperate for, at last, a juicy story the manager has been peppered with questions about his £22m capture from Fiorentina.

Is he homesick? Is he unsetlled?

Pellegrini could have stuck the pads on and done a job for England's jumpy middle order in Australia, judging by the straight bat he firmly played his answers with.

After the West Ham mauling a journalist despatched especially from Italy to ask about Jovetic asked him once more.

The poor lad would have been better off staying at home, keeping dry and reading Pellegrini's comments the last time he was asked the same question.

"Jovetic will be fantastic, he has suffered injuries in the first half of the season but we all know what he can do and hope the second half will be better."

It was almost as though he had memorised it.

If holistic can be judged on the pitch by results, with the Blues already at Wembley barring an unthinkable disaster and fighting for glory on four fronts, it appears to be going well.

Off it, column inches at the front of the paper as well as the back are not a bad barometer.

As much as we laughed (and wrote stories), can you imagine Negredo turning up at Xaverian and asking where the toilets are?

Me neither.

The only drama holistic does is of the footballing kind - and there is more on the way in this Happy Blue Year.

Caught a bit of TalkSport this morning. John Cross from the Mirror was on saying how we are on a completely different level to any other side in England. We were even described as a joy to watch.

Alan Brazil then slurred his way through waxing lyrical about how good Negredo is.

I feel like they're lulling us into a false sense of security before the story this weekend that Aguero's not really injured, he's refusing to play as he wants to join the rags and play for them for free as he was a boyhood fan

Must admit, I know the opposition were naff, but the other night some of the football had me gasping!

I went into the office Thursday morning and chatted to the west ham lad who refused to watch.......he text me last night saying he had tuned in specially to watch the re-run, because all his mates had been texting him from home saying how incredible city were.

The first goal from Negredo was truly a thing of beauty - and route one too!!

I truly think that we are on the cusp of dominating the league. Chelsea are probably our only threat. The football at times is amazing. If our away performances start to match our home performances then nobody will touch us. Like an alcoholic I feel I need to unburden this feeling. I have been a very pessimistic City fan in the past. I still agonise for the final whistle when we are 4-1 up fearing an utter collapse. But I trust the board, the players look happy, and we look at times awesome. I may regret these words but I feel positive about City for the first time in years.

I've noticed a considerable change in the attitude of a decent number of journos this season.

The likes of Oliver Holt have been almost pro City. It's because we are playing great football. The media love to watch great football, even if it comes from City. If we keep it going over time, we will become a bit of a 2nd favourite with many fans too.

A lot of resentment inside the game at the moment though, from ex players etc. Most of the comments I referred to on the other thread about not getting credit, are from people within the football industry. Every time we batter somebody, there will be one of their ex players plus a rag or scouser on tv to talk about it.

One or two journos who were very much anti City are being charmed into submission though.

And to think there were fans on here calling the count a clown ( That was Jabba from Thailand ) and also slagging off the 2 Spanish dudes......all because they still had a hard on for Mancini.

Some of these fans don't post much anymore.......which is nice.

On a personal note , I have never ever seen City play like this on a consistent basis , in fact , I don't think I have seen us play like this ever..it was all tikki takka before and predictable and nothing like what we are witnessing now.

Loving it.

As you mention mate, it takes time but attitudes are beginning to change. We've all seen how much shit has been thrown our way but the longer you are there the less it sticks until you're in a position where it's not worth throwing anymore.

What we're showing now is that we are becoming a dominant force therefore disproving what has been mentioned previously. We're proving year on year that we're a force to deal with and now that's done the media, and people, are now seeing, and probably hoping, that we'll move on in the European game. Facing a team like Barca and hearing statements that we were the last team they wanted to face brings a sense of pride to all English followers as it takes our league, and their team, to be seen in a greater light. The only supporters who won't like it is the likes of the Rags, Arsenal and possibly a few Dippers and Spurs fans but that's only because they believe we've somehow stolen their place in the pecking order rather than us taking it because they didn't/wouldn't invest. It's only natural.

I'm envisaging that in 10 and 20 years, we'll be that team constantly played on Sky Sports Gold and that we'll have lived through that era that the likes of Juve, Milan, Rags, Real, Barca and Bayern have enjoyed. We'll be renowned the world over and with links in many countries, including the emerging football nations like the USA, our appeal will only increase. When Garry Cook said about 'World Domination', he wasn't kidding, was he?

The Future's Bright, The Future's Blue.

Oh, and thanks for sharing, the article, and thread, is a very nice read.

The thing is, for me, so long as we compete for the title each season & win some, I'm happy playing this kind of football rather than being an unbeatable machine who wins everything in a well organised but uninspiring way.

To compare other teams in the last ten or twenty years, I'd rather win one title every two or three years with Wengers Henry/ Vieira Arsenal side, than win ten titles in ten years with George Graham's Arsenal side.

I think we can, & will, win a fair amount of titles playing this way, even if we don't get it this season.

Wait til we start doing it with players brought through from the academy too.

Then we'll see some serious rule changing.

lose or draw a couple games on the trot and we know how fast the script will change. I hate being favorites.

Regardless of what our 'local' paper has to say, the idea that fans throughout the whole of Europe may at some point in the not too distant future be tuning in to watch City because of the exciting football we play simply floats my boat. If we can combine that with some trophies all the better.

I think City are very much under the radar with the press which is the way the board want it. Let all the other managers hog the limelight. Big Sam will probably get the shove soon meaning that sack talk should fall back on gollum (its irrelevant if he will go or not - its good to watch). Of course putting Barca out of the CL may escalate things but then ambitions are high and consistent success means more press focus.

Who are you? And how did you hack into Carl's account? Not one negative comment (aside from Jabba from Thailand) and not a mere mention of Lescott.

Anyway, whoever you are, well said!

Go on Carl, let em have it.

I remember thinking that some of the possession we had under Mancini was awesome, and if we could only tick over the goals would flow. Now I feel like an idiot because what Pelli has shown me has totally blown that out of the water.

Not putting down Mancini's accomplishments, but the football is worlds apart and i agree wholeheartedly with you here.

Add that most rag players are not used AT ALL to media pressure on their team. You join the rags expecting the media to baby powder your bum hole. The longer that the media sustains criticism against them, the more likely we will start to see serious cracks (bust-ups, players wanting out, players upset at being on the bench, players unhappy with gollum's tactics...)

It will be beautiful.
