Under 18's V Hereford and 16's in Quatar

The young blues needed extra time to see off the spirited Bulls, but extra time goals from Thierry Ambrose and Bersant Celina finally proved enough to secure victory after the visitors had cancelled out Ambrose’s opener in the dying minutes of normal time.
A report from the OS again!

The Bulls are well-travelled in the FA Youth Cup, having come through five previous ties in which they were drawn as the away team in each round. A dramatic penalty shootout against Bournemouth preceded this trip to Manchester, after overcoming Chesterfield, Atherstone and Stourbridge.

Although several younger members of Patrick Vieira’s EDS squad are eligible for this competition, Jason Wilcox elected not to call on the talents of the likes of Marcos Lopes, Jose Angel Pozo and Olivier Ntcham, instead keeping faith with the side currently sitting top of the u18 Premier League.

The boss made just two changes from the side that despatched Doncaster so convincingly in the last round of the competition. Spanish right back Pablo Maffeo replaced James Horsfield, and Nathaniel Oseni came in for Tosin Adarabioyo to partner Mathias Bossaerts at the heart of the City defence.

There was a familiar look to the attack which has been terrorising opposition defences all season. The Blues had netted 39 times in the previous 10 matches, and Jorge Intima, Brandon Barker and Ambrose were called upon once again to provide the firepower upfront.

City were in no mood to ease the visitors in gently, and Ambrose chalked up his 11th goal of the campaign inside 30 seconds. The French striker was lurking in the six yard box to poke home Barker’s pinpoint cross from the left to give the Blues the perfect start.

But Hereford refused to be cowed, and might have had an equaliser from the spot within five minutes when Angelino was adjudged to have brought down Jarrod Bowen. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn was the hero for the Blues, pulling off a magnificent save to push Billy Murphy’s kick onto the post and preserve the early lead.

A feisty start showed no signs of abating, with plenty of fierce tackles flying in as both sides attempted to gain influence in the centre of the park. Kean Bryan headed wide from a Jack Byrne cross, while Gunn was called upon once more to tip a powerful free kick over the bar from Cory Williams.

The Blues continued to probe, and Bryan had another chance on the half hour, volleying wide from Intima’s cross, while Angelino’s powerful shot was pushed behind for a corner by Kyle Moore in the Hereford goal.

It was end to end action as the half time whistle approached. Williams was inches away from finding an equaliser, but his acrobatic effort curled just over the bar, while Barker might have doubled City’s lead, but fired just past the top corner after being played through by Angelino.

The game continued in thrilling fashion after the break, and Intima dragged his shot wide after a good run upfield within two minutes of the restart, while Moore was forced to push the ball behind direct from a Jack Byrne corner which was dipping under the crossbar.

City laid siege to the Hereford goal, and Barker was desperately unlucky to see his shot saved by the excellent Moore, after brilliant build up play from Bryan. Substitute Denzeil Boadu was next to test the Bulls’ keeper but he was unable to get any power on the shot.

The game lost some of its spark as the second period progressed, but the substitute Will Haines found an equaliser for the visitors just minutes before full time, bundling home a free kick after Nathaniel Oseni’s foul.

There was a frenetic pace to the concluding minutes of normal time as both teams tried to find a winner before extra time was required and Angus Gunn made an excellent low stop to prevent Hereford netting the deciding goal with the last kick of the 90 minutes. The boy Blues began extra time in the same way they had opened the match two hours previously. In an almost exact replica of the first goal, Ambrose gave City the lead for the second time, powering home a Brandon Barker cross within the first minute of kick off.

At the other end, Gunn was forced to make an unorthodox save with his face as the Bulls continued to test City’s resolve, and the England youth international keeper also had to be at his best to save when one on one.City finally put the game to bed after 104 minutes of play when Bersant Celina curled a beautiful strike into the top corner from an indirect free kick in the Hereford penalty box for his third goal in two games.

Hereford continued to press for a goal right up until the final whistle, but City prevailed and the FA Youth cup journey continues into the fifth round.

What filthy night and a dreadful pitch to have to play on.I really hope the next round against quality opposition (Spurs and Fulham are supposed to be the best teams from the South) isn't played at Hyde. There were some very boggy areas on the pitch tonight where the ball does not bounce and nice slick passing is very difficult.

Not a great performance tonight but they got the job done.Hereford were most likely to score when we messed up.Bossaerts did it twice in the first half, once with an inexplicable pass straight to a guy near the edge of the box with the nearest City player miles away. Angelino gave a silly penalty away.He did nothing intentionally but just got too close to a guy running out of the box with the ball.

Sounds like we gutted out a win and good to see the young ones advance. Sounds like conditions didn't help but we got there in the end.

That's about the size of it.Hereford were really up for it and tried very hard to stop us settling and playing and seemed to keep up their energy level all 120 minutes. We had players dropping all over the pitch in extra time with cramp while none of the Hereford players needed treatment. On 2 separate occasions we had 2 players down needing help as thee game was going on.

Thanks Doug.

Amazing how many players go through the U18 & EDS teams. I wonder what the strongest 11s would be ?

Then next season, we probably have two or three world cup winning Nigerian lads competing with the best of these for places in the EDS team (unless they come straight into the first team squad).

We are going to have to lose some of these lads, even though they are possible players of the future. The standard will be so high, we can't possibly keep them all.

Exactly right Ted.This" team" is doing really well at the moment as you know but only time will tell if any will make it on the big stage. We do have plenty of recruited stars from all sorts of places and Nigeria most recently playing in lower age groups than the 18's.I haven't seen anything of them so that's something to look forward to.

It is amazing that this team's success has been without Lopes,Ntcham and Pozo in any games as far as I know as you would have to think they would be in a strongest 11.All pretty irrelevant I suppose and those lads are playing above their age groups and some of the older ones ,over 18's go on loans so we rarely see our best under 21's side either.

Cheers Doug.

Im sure the young lads will be a lot stronger for the experience now. Sometimes you have gut check games and this sounds like one of them.

Thanks for the report Mr H. As ever, it's greatly appreciated.

Just a daft thought but if ever Mathias Bossaerts makes it through into the first team and establishes himself there, his surname will provide a great 'nickname' for the fans and a headline writer's dream.......'The Boss'.

He would have to improve massively on last night's performance but you are right. There was a crowd of 384 at the game last night and in the row behind me there must have been 12 of the Bossaerts family. Parents plus all sorts of brothers/sisters and others.

Anyone watching the U 16's in the tournament in Quatar? Being streamed live.11.1 at half time with Chicago. We are dominating almost totally against the parked bus but went one down very early.

What a great watch that was and now a short break before hopefully a good comfy win tonight. 6.1 it ended! Ever known that scoreline before.

In a way it was as easy as the score suggests because we played them off the park but at 2.1 we gave them 3 golden chances to score which they missed. One headed wide ( free header) one hit over after a free kick was headed down ( a free shot from about 8 yards and very central) and then a break down the right and the guy hit the post with a cut back.

We have some very tasty players and this was effectively my first viewing of them.Paulo Fernandes Cantin ( Fernandes) looked quality.Playing right side he is left footed and scored with a shot into the top left corner. Very Robben like.

Buckley was I think our lone striker and looked very good. Quick and strong with very good movement.Missed some chances but scored the 3rd and 4th coming in from the left side.

Then we brought on Zacharias Faour for the last 10 or 15. He's Swedish and apparently being called the next Ibra. From the little bit I saw I thought he looked and played more like Kaka. He scored 2 at the end quite casually. The first from the edge of the box as he ran at them and they retreated. And then a 25 yard free kick which he seemed insistent on taking. The commentator said top right corner and that's where it went with the keeper not moving.

Some serious quality out there and they play like the 1st team or maybe Barca I could tell which.

I watched the U16s & although I will be surprised if we go far in the tournament (purely because of lack of defensive organisation), there were a host of very very impressive players on view, & you would have to say it would be a surprise if at least one or two don't make it in the future.

Buckley (aka Ricketts) looked like the joker in the pack early doors & did a passable impression of Rufus Smalls in front of goal, almost single handedly keeping Chicago in the game, but he didn't let that stop him & scored two beauties 2nd half. Fair play to him.

Garcia was a young Xavi/Iniesta in the centre mid, Ernest was everywhere in midfield & looks an allround top footballer, even the English lad in there, Will Patching, played with continental style & grace (was likened to Carrick but I hope he is better than that) Fernandez was at times brilliant, & ther were even excellent moments from the defenders individually; just not as a unit (bobbins).

The 'next Messi' came on & tended to hang onto the ball too much & lose it, but it's obvious he has got some serious dribbling talent & he runs like Kinkladze.

Then Faour. We scored some fantastic goals v Blackburn, but none were better than his free kick, which would have beaten Joe Hart without him moving. Drogba/Ronaldo style dipping over the wall. Awesome.

Not sure I have seen a worse keeping error for a long time. 1 nil down.
