Pretty much all of the matchday programmes I've seen from back in the day have a hole cut in them, where a coupon used to be. Can anyone one here tell me what these coupons did, why we don't have them any more, and roughly when this coupon thing stopped?

You used to stick them on a sheet and use them for big match tickets, before the days of loyalty points.

So would that be finals and semis, then? Would they only be valid for the season in which they were printed?

Yeah valid for that season. Big mistake to cut them out till you actually got through to the later stages coz you ruined your programmes for nothing!

From some of the seasons I have old programmes from, that would appear to be the case!
