I touched on it in the seedlings thread, but why do you think we don't get as excited about the CL as other clubs seem to. The biggest names in European football, a galaxy of stars playing in front of our very eyes, great trips to exotic cities. So what is it that stops us loving it?

Winning domestic trophies is primary número uno for most city fans IMO.

If we haven't won the league then one of the sides I hate most has won it.

Also I don't think the CL has provided the excitement and the emotion that the league has yet.

Just look a drawers for the past few years. Predictable, boring and repetitive. Favouring the old guard, poor refereeing, racialism, the list goes on

In short, we're just getting used to being at the top and for many, the thought of fighting for the PL is enough at the moment; we don't take it for granted.

The CL is run by a bunch of spineless bastards who will do anything to ensure their beloved teams get an easy ride. If an upstart gets the jump they'll ensure hurdles are set in-place to bring it down and if the seedings, TV scheduling etc, don't get them, they'll have their in-match director(the referee) move more than just the goalposts.

I think we're nearing the turning point where the CL will become more interesting for us. At the moment we're still seen as the upstart and treated accordingly, but soon I can see our club really forcing the issue in Europe and as soon as the fans see us getting a similar billing/footing to what the other elite teams get, then we'll be on-board.

It was designed to make money for Arsenal, rags etc, & we as supporters are not like them. They love slimey, phoney shit, we tend to see it for what it is. Plus we have no history in it; we had no say in its design. The whole thing is a corrupt cunts' tournament created for cunts, by cunts & is still being fixed for cunts, by cunts.

It's not surprising we don't feel at home in it after watching it for years & being 90% bored shitless watching a bunch of cunts. How many truly memorable games have there been out of 1000s ? Even then, how many of them end with cheating or bias ?

I suspect if it was a knockout competition involving champions, we would be right up for it 100% but nothing we have seen since we started playing in the Champions League, has done anything to downgrade its ambience of corrupt cuntiness.

For me, the CL is a false competition, designed by the rich clubs for the pursuance of their own greed for money and power. It has nothing whatsoever to do with football. Every aspect of it, whether seeding, the coefficients, the FFP, the mini leagues, the double funds that award the biggest chunks of income to the elite, were all designed to either fill their coffers or disenfranchise and/or negate opposition.

It is no coincidence that clubs that once competed such as Ajax, PSV, etc no longer figure and in one fail swoop they got rid of just about every competitive East European club...Patizan, Zagreb, Steaua, the Russians clubs etc.

That said, I dearly want to win the CL. not because it would make us European Champions but because it would shove the old elite's corruption and attempts to stop us RIGHT UP THEIR ARSES...now that would be some trophy worth winning.

It's a plastic tournament designed for plastic fans.

I'm with you there mate. We'll have to do it the hard way as they'll put every obstacle in our but if we make it, it'll make it oh so more sweeter than it would by being one of the cozy cartel.

I have been railing against it for years. I've always considered a cash cow , controlled by the elite for the elite.
It has lost its romance and mystery, no longer are "crack Czech outfits' a relevance. Interesting John mentioned Ajax and PSV, as they were members of the G14 originally I think. Ditched by their crooked mates.
It is in effect, a tri nation tournament these days with probably only half a dozen potential winners. Has been for a while really.
I wish we could ignore it, but is a necessity in order to win domestically.
The amount of diving and cheating we have to put up with is another downer about it. Watching The great Barca lobbing themselves on the deck at every opportunity seemed even more obvious in the flesh.
I think maybe we still feel like outsiders, I wonder if that will ever change?
As an aside, I think our owners would like to be on the inside and to benefit from the advantages the elite get. I just get the feeling that is the way we are heading. We WILL break through eventually and we WILL benefit from FFP and seeding in the future. It WILL suit us in the end, hope we still want what is right though.

there are many good reasons to distrust the competition, but the reality is we will never win the league regularly if we are not considered a club that can go far in the champions league.

top players go to and remain at clubs that can offer that hope.

so, from my perspective i want us to succeed there because we have to to remain competitive.

To be honest, I don't get overly excited by the CL as I just know that I'm going to witness a fucking turd of a bent ref and if they arnt bent then they are fucking inept which in turn spoils any kind of possible enjoyment I might have got out of watching the game.

The hype
The seeding system
The doubly-untrue title 'Champions League' (most are not champions and it is not a league)
The mostly tedious and uncompetitive group stage (uncompetitive apart from the group we are drawn in)
The music
Having to move my seat for a bunch of EUFA tourists
The cost
The fact they don't serve beer in the ground before the game
The long-drawn out process of drawing the fixtures
Etc.

The cheating. The cynical diving and time wasting. When Bayern beat us 3-1 at home they were lauded as a fantastic team but personally I thought they were a disgrace. Whenever we got within a yard of them they fell over. It's tactical, it's practised, it's terrible. The home game v Barca was fucking boring. Ticcy tacky crap.

The fact it's called the Champion's League and 3/4 of the teams in our league in the competition are not champions.
