I just watched this again after not seeing it for many years, and he literally could have said all of this yesterday and it would have been relevant to football today.
Have a watch, its cloughie at his brilliant best

Marvellous.
And MOTD is even worse for talking heads now than it was then.
Interesting that he said he would fuck off off the European Cup & the other two cups every time, for the chance to win the league. And that was the old First Division, before Sky invented football.
Also the goal Trevor Francis scored; Roberson getting a yard, dipping cross over the top of the defenders to the far post, would beat our current back four 100 times out of 100. No way would Zabba stop the cross, now way would they expect the ball delivered in a loop & no way would anyone pick up Francis or stop him from scoring if they did.

What Cloughie did at Derby County was notable. To do it again, and even better at Forest was remarkable. A true genius and he should be remembered for those days when the fire burned brightly than in his later time when the sparkle had gone.
Duncan Hamilton's book "Provided you don't kiss me" on his years with Clough is one of the most honest, incisive, touching and heart rendering sporting stories Ive ever read and in my humble opinion is well worthy of any football fans time. If you haven't read it Id recommend you do so.

Forest v Malmo or Forest v Hamburg. Not much chance of getting match ups like them in the European Cup Final now. That wasn't good enough !

Think was Piccs, those teams were either Champions of their domestic league or current European Champions - not 3rd place in La Liga or 4th in the Prem.

The difference in quality between the bigger leagues and the smaller ones was much less significant as well. For instance, back then there were only a handful of Swedes playing in Europe. Nowadays they kids are picked mediocre Danish and Dutch sides as soon as they start shaving.

Fantastic.
It's a pity that a Brian Clough, in his prime, couldn't be around today. He said what he thought, didn't pussyfoot around and wasn't bothered who he offended by stating his views in his forthright manner.
When you compare him to pettyfogging dullards such as Brendan Bodgers, Agent Moyes and their ilk today, he would have been a breath of fresh air and heaven knows what he would have made of the Fat Frenchman and his cronies.
As has been said before, he was the best manager the England national team never had.

He would get the job today. In those days they were scared of him.
Wouldn't have made Gerrard Lampard & Beckham play together though & England would still be shit.

Had he been around today and took the job while in his prime and ended up with the Golden Generation, and fucked up, what do you think it would have done for his reputation?
We he have left and got it back together, or would he have been laughed out of any prospect of a job by the press?

Clough would have selected the players to do the job. So it is quite reasonable that Clough might not have selected any of those players.
England wouldn't be a Sh*t team, as is suggested under Clough.

But isn't European football so much better for all the changes that were made to enhance it?

No.
Realistially only four or five teams have a chance of winning it. Its purely a money making exercise, not competition. Much preferred the old three competition format myself. Bigger and brasher isn't always better

Brian Clough
That guy was a genius. His record proves it.
I remember he bought a centerhalf from Bayern Munich, Einar Aas, a Norwegian. They played a game against a Norwegian side in Oslo because of it in -81. I travelled to the game with three mates, one of them a Forest supporter, as a 12 year old. The Forest supporter bundled his way with another mate to him and said: Hello Brian and you're the best. Brian put an arm around both of my mates, spoke to them and will remain a giant. Together with Malcolm Allison - a few selected will never grow old. :)

What was also really interesting was the interview between Clough and Revie jyst after Clough had been sacked by Leeds. Truly remarkable stuff. Imagine Mancini and Hughes arguing about players and performance on the night that Mancini is sacked

There was a story about Brian Clough after he had just signed Trevor Francis for a huge fee (might have been a record at the time, but I can't now remember).
They'd just had their first training session and when they all got back into the changing room afterwards, he told Francis to go and put the kettle on and make the teas for everyone.
I wonder if that sort of thing would ever happen today ?? ..............

At Scouse 2 Mario was asked to put the kettle on and keep the pot warm in that tea cosy hat of his.

Agreed. Might even get it again in hardback for another read and keep it in my collection..
As for Clough's views on TV he is spot on. TV in general is like that now though, too many hours and channels to fill and too many empty headed people on it.
