Danny Ings is a transfer target for Tottenham but the club could face competition from Manchester City for his signature.
The Burnley forward is out of contract in the summer and has no plans to sign a new one. That makes Burnley vulnerable to a knockdown offer during this month’s transfer window, although both Ings, 22, and his club insist he will remain at Turf Moor for the rest of the season.
Standard Sport understands that Paul Mitchell, Tottenham’s recently-appointed head of recruitment and analysis, is a long-time admirer of Ings and was keen to bring him to Southampton before he left the south coast for White Hart Lane.
Ings impressed in Burnley’s 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane last month and has been high on the club’s list of possible recruits since, although it is believed City are also following the situation. History suggests that if the champions were to pursue Ings seriously, Spurs would struggle to win that race, although it remains to be seen how serious their interest is.
At this stage, a January bid is not certain as Tottenham need to move on at least one of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado before they can provide head coach Mauricio Pochettino with another forward. Adebayor has interest from Qatar and the United States and has 18 months remaining on his contract.
If Ings leaves in the summer, Burnley would be entitled only to compensation for a player whose reputation has grown quickly this term. Yet selling him now would deprive boss Sean Dyche of one of his best players and place Burnley at greater risk of relegation, denying them the financial benefits of a second season in the Premier League.
Should Burnley have a change of heart and opt to sell this month, they may emphasise City’s interest in talks with interested clubs, as a way of negotiating a better deal.

You're not wrong.
In City's position now, Ings aint what they used to be..

May never be good enough to challenge for a starting spot at City, mind, but could be useful as option no. 3 or 4, if our people are not comfortable trusting the kids. He'll be 23 in July, is English, shouldn't demand too high a wage and no transfer fee. I can see why we would 'monitor' his situation, even if we decide against him in the end.
It's funny how you'll get lots of 'maybe under Pearce' type of comments, but if he tears it up next season for a mid-table team, we'll be looking at an obligatory £20m and the same people will ask why we never look for 'the bloke Atletico sign for a pittance to replace Torres/Aguero/Falcao/Costa'.
