MANCHESTER CITY have made huge strides one expanding their fan base but it's bad news for rivals Manchester United, according to new figures released today.

Spanish newspaper Sport published research into which European clubs have made the most progress in expanding their global reach.

And with City emerging as a Premier League force in recent seasons, it is no surprise to the the Citizens experiencing massive growth.

The figures suggest that City have seen their fan base grow by a staggering 523 per cent - more than double the growth shown by next best Bayern Munich - in recent times.

It is suggested that City have gained 72.5m more fans in China, 34.6m in Indonesia, 24.5m in Mexico and 10.1m in United Kingdom.

And while Chelsea and Liverpool have both increased their followers by approximately 80 per cent, the news is less positive for United and Arsenal.

Arsenal saw their fans fall away by three per cent but United - who have struggled since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson as boss - are said to have seen a 19 per cent drop in fans.

Still, it could be worse - as the graphic shows Serie A side Inter Milan are a team in decline with over 44 per cent of their fan base being eroded away in recent times

that is probably the biggest load of bullshit I have read.

I don't doubt we have grown and will continue to grow, but putting such stupid figures on it is just bullshit.

If Liverpool have grown by 80% then that would knock our 523% out of the stratosphere, 80% increase on what they already had is fucking HUGE.

10.1m in te UK... LMFAO

Dear Penthouse,

I could see my own face distorted by pleasure, reflected in the head of the bald man kneeling in front of me. His well-groomed beard tickled my testicles, but in a nice way. For close to 40 years I had followed my team though misery and sorrow - sometimes in snow, often in rain. The happy memories were few and far between, but this blowie. THIS blowie. It made it all worth it.

The figures are probably taken from an increase in people watching the games, rather than actual 'fans'.

Liverpool did absolutely fuck all for years, then were involved in a title race which they thought they were going to win. When Benitez, Dalglish & Hodgson were there, many of their own fans probably didn't bother watching them. There were even loads of empty seats at Anfield. That probably accounts for the vast recent increase in interest worldwide.

The other figures are not then any different to what you would imagine to be the case. City's up hugely, the rags down some.

Some of City's figures for media in China are very surprising indeed. We may have gained something of a disproportionate advantage there.

Carl has already mentioned about the latin countries.

The very fact that this comes from a Spanish newspaper, also says something. In the past we wouldn't have merited even a mention.

I'm sure I read our UK fanbase was just shy of 2 million about a decade ago. With the additional 10.1 million, that would mean almost 1 in 5 people in the UK support City.

When you consider that maybe 10% of men and 30% of women aren't interested in football/show no team allegiance (roughly 20% of the population), that would mean 1 in 4 fans of a football club are fans of Manchester City.

Complete tosh.

To declare them as fans is bollocks yes.

Not if you take it as the number of people interested in watching City's games though. We play great football, have some geat players & many casual football fans around the world would sometimes want to watch City, just the same as I wanted to watch Arsenal years ago & Barca under Pep & Rijkaard. If someone asked me, would I tune in to watch Arsenal, ten years ago, the answer would have been yes. Didn't make me a fan, but it's significant.

I think that's how it has worked over the years with the rags. If 600 mil say they would watch one of their games, there are obviously 600 million Utd fans according to the media here.

Wonderful stats. Anything that shows us in a good light, and progressive, is a bonus. The extra is that the Rags are waning wankers.

I assume they are counting people who watched part of s game in TV somewhere.

On that basis I am now a Bala fan, saw a bit of them in the pub Sunday and boosted their fan base 50% ;-)

This is the sort of story that would be written in reverse in this country - against City. Everyone would go nuts about bias and other fans would go ho ho ho. So any pro-City propoganda is to be welcomed in my eyes.

Whilst clearly the extrapolation to the UK is rubbish, there must be some base trend to this - didn't the club say we are the most mentioned on Chinese social media?

If you think about these figures it's not that outlandish really. If we had 1 fan say in Katmandu and then someone else decided to become a fan that's an increase of 100%.
