Blackpool’s owners seek £150,000 in damages from supporters’ forum

Blackpool’s owners Owen and Karl Oyston have launched a libel case against a supporters’ online forum and are seeking £150,000 of damages.

Papers were served last week after six derogatory comments about the pair were made on the Back Henry Street website last year.

A Blackpool spokesman has confirmed that the Oystons are taking legal action but has refused to make any further comment. However, a notice published on Back Henry Street gave more details.

“To clear up any rumours, on Thursday 5 February 2015, Back Henry Street was served papers from the court, relating to the Oystons’ and Blackpool Football Club’s intent to seek damages for six allegedly defamatory comments made on the site in 2014, limited collectively at £150,000.

“For obvious reasons, we can not go into any more detail at this time. Thank you for your continued support.”

Organisers of the forum have also appealed for supporters to help fund their legal costs.

“A message board is perhaps the greatest bastion of free speech and that is a right that can never be threatened,” it read. “It is not down to just one person to fight the Oystons, it is our collective duty.”

Last week, supporter David Ragozzino was given 21 days to respond to a claim for £150,000 damages from the club after he posted a message on the Another View From the Tower website.

Fucking ban CARL now or we're fucked.

Bunch of fucking pussies at Blackpool. What a load of shit. Someone should vote with their feet and boycott their matches.

Honestly...fascistic at it's most basic level. Fucking horrible unless they've somehow made this personal in a way that i can't even imagine (as in home numbers, addresses and threats etc)

cheers

Blackpool have been a mess for years which their year in the Prem briefly disguised; however my solicitor advises me against saying more.

What a joke, I hope the Blackpool fans show their support by boycotting the club, let's see how that £150,000 stacks up against an empty ground for a couple of weeks.

Well said Slim - I've not been to a Blackpool game since they beat us 2-1 in the first game of the season in the texaco cup, back in 1977 or thereabouts, and I'm recently been getting an inexplicable urge to attend a game and stand where the Gene Kelly used to be . . but I'll take your advice and boycott instead.

They have complete contempt for their fans, just like the bloke at Newcastle. Still, they're English, so that's the main thing.

The first (I think) club to use a payday loan company as a shirt sponsor (in the higher tiers at least) - pretty much says it all right there.
