Kevin Davies - strange international call ups

I saw Kevin Davies playing for Preston NE this weekend, and got a bit nostalgic. I always used to have him in my fantasy team back in his Bolton days, and he always earned me plenty of points.

Anyroad, I went to his Wiki page to check out his career stats and noticed that he got an England call up - his one and only - in 2010. Why the hell would you call up a 33 year old Kevin Davies for an international game?

Joey Barton is another one who's stranded on one cap, although I sort of got why he was called up at the time. He was actually in quite good form when he had just moved to Newcastle, and he was also only 25 at the time.

Can you think of any other strange call ups and one cap wonders?

Colin Cowdrey aged 41 vs Lillie and Thomson.

Oh football..

Lee Hendrie
Tim Sherwood
Ian Walker
Mike Phelan
Barry Venison
Kieran Richardson (8 fucking caps!) Eight!!
Rob Jones (see above).

Brian Deane
Dion Dublin

The more you think about it, the worse it gets. Thhose are mainly 1,2.3 caps & there are fucking scores of them with less than ten who should never get anywhere near, & some who got well into double figures.

eoin morgan. He needs to sing the national anthem and get some runs or fuck off.

Some of Graham Taylor's choices were interesting. I thought Steve Bull deserved his caps and never really let England down though.

agreed on Bully, but they came too late IMO, he should have been called up earlier and not because of press pressure

Frazier Campbell. I win.

Scored 6 league goals in 4 years and that "earned" him a call up and a cap - from Stuart Pearce no less so that probably explains it. Campbell is in the conversation with David White for worst player to ever get 1 cap, though Whitey did a lot more at club level so I think Campbell clinches it.

Does anybody remember Garry Flitcroft and Richard Edghill getting a call up in the mid 90s?

I remember there wasn't a fixture but they picked a squadanyway. The press were talking about them being future regulars following that. Neither ever won a cap.

Steve Guppy. I mean, really. WTF happened there. Though not as big a mystery as to how Shrek has 100 caps

Don Revie handed a few out. Still cannot fathom what he was doing there...especially after all those years building a tight Leeds unit...take the West Germany game in 75 for example, who were world champions at the time, he picks a midfield of Ball and Hudson who gel immediately, Hudson runs the game, England win 2-0 and he never picks that combo again. It seems a requirement as England manager to have a long slow painful brainfart upon taking the job. I cant even totally discount the idea of Clough falling into the same trap.

All of these probably look worse in retrospect.

Can some intelligent people tell us stories of some none UK ones?
