City Shirts (nostalgia)

Postby Wonderwall » Fri Mar 13, 2015 10:37 am

This link gives a nice look through many of the City shirts

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ ... es-4707935

However, I must have alzheimers kicking in as I cannot for the life of me remember this kit? Its obviously late 80's Early 90's but I saw and thought WTF, when did we wear this??

We've had a shirt sponsor ever since 1982, so it must be from before then, unless there was some weird law about sponsorship in the Full Members' Cup or something.

According to this (http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Manches ... r_City.htm) it's our 87-89 home kit, but without a sponsor.

I could have bought the mood explanation if it wasn't for the tailored waist. Not seen that on too many manc lads.

cheers BiB, weird? I have got the other two Bother home kits after this first one? I specifically remember the one with the chevrons on the arms because they were cheap iron on rubbish that pealed off when you washed it.

I dont even remember the 95 kit having CITY as part of the design either?

I do. I think Maine Road was woven into the fabric, too.

We wore it 1987-89 (sponsored by Brother). I think in those days you could buy the shirt minus the club sponsor on the front of the shirt as I have one like that from back in the day. Never forget Bradford away promotion game with Trevor Morley sliding in to put the ball in the back of the net.

Was it a fans' only version, then? Or was it also worn in something like the Rumbelow's Cup or Full Members' Cup?

Wish you could still do that.

When I were a lad the only people carrying the logos of some other bugger's business were called sandwich board men. Now we pay for the privilege.

A shirt with only the City emblem and nothing else would look brilliant.

American Football and Baseball consider their shirts sacrosanct and are entirely advertising free. A shame that football didn't have the backbone to enforce that.

I'd forgotten just how insipid those Reebok kits were. Le Coq weren't amazing, but at least they gave us unique designs. But those Reebok ones are a perfect example of how close we were to the bottom of the barrel.

I looked through every kit there and knew of each one, especially from my first shirt, the 90 season home effort. I go through each one on that list and remembered them all in every detail. Got to Reebok and went "fuck, I'd forgotten about them".

Jesus that was a bleak few years.

Some proper ugly kits in years gone by, no shape to them at all.

I always loved that Kappa one below, i remember losing the plot when the tip of my mates cigarette burnt a huge hole in it.

A good game and performance from City, with some fine goals.

I was with a (Geordie) friend and we managed to get into the ground behind one of the goals amongst all the Bradford supporters, so I had to be a little wary as to how I 'celebrated'.

I thought Paul Stewart had a fine game that evening.

Mikhail; Paul Stewart had fucked off to Spurs by then mate (must be a different match). It was Paul Moulden and Morley playing up top that day. Regarding whether or not you had a choice to buy it with or without the club sponsor on the front - I don't know for sure. I just bought mine like that. I think you did possibly have the choice.

As worn that day we scored ten. I used to have a Sunday morning kickabout with lads in worked with and picked this shirt up in a discount sports shop in Cheetham Hill. Cost me £8 and did not have Brother on the front.

Was never a fan of the Kappa kits and the yellow and black stripey play off monstrosity gets my vote for worst away kit. The Reebok effort with white sleeves gets the home vote. Best two are the 81 cup final and 78 away.
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

Wow branny. We are at opposite ends for the kits. I loved the kappa kits. I was on the kippax for the 10-1 but for the life of me i cant remember that kit. Maybe because the kit Huddersfield were wearing is possibly the worst kit EVER.

I agree with you on the Huddersfield kit. Looked like a Wilson's beermat.
