Holistic, like any other approach to football, only works if you are good at it.

I think the club as a whole is moving in the right direction holistically, however the issue is that in younger age groups players can be moulded to suit particular roles in a system. In the senior team, Pellegrini took over a squad of players who despite being incredibly talented, do not fit into any logical system - particularly the issue of Silva and Toure.

Until either the manager, or director of football grows some balls and sorts the problem out by ditching one or both of them, we will continue to be hammering square pegs into round holes, with consequences for the whole club, in particular the question of how we fit talented young midfielders in, expecting them to compensate for the defensive failings of others who either can't or won't put a shift in.

We have proven we can wing it when all players are on top form through sheer talent alone, however we've squeaked through our two titles with a late burst of consistent form, after some very worrying spells through the season. But as soon as form of the individuals drop for an extended period for whatever reason (as happened under Adolf Mancini) the whole pack of cards falls in as we can't sustain a title challenge when half the team are playing out of position AND out of form.

I feel that if we had a settled team with a settled system and players playing their natural role rather than having to compensate for two central midfielders who choose to only do half a job, we would have been considerably more consistent in all of the last 4 seasons. At that point, the system of bringing through youth players as round pegs in round holes will work far more effectively, and the holistic view would pay dividends.

The one thing that's always bugged me about that buzz word is that we hired Pellegrini in the first place. I never understood why Txiki would hire someone who he knows doesn't play the system that is being implemented throughout the club. There's nothing holistic about that.

I think even at Malaga, his actual 'formation' was difficult to work out, much as it has been here. We might look like a 442 on paper at times, but that's not how it works out in the pitch, I think that the holistic approach to football is that where the direction of the entire club is the focus, rather than just the first team. To be holistic, doesn't mean building a carbon copy at every level, but it means ensuring that the youth setup is able to provide players who can slot into the first team with relevant comfort, perhaps by virtue of simple roles and philosophies such as pressing as a team.

Unfortunately, our current first team squad can't be arsed doing this most of the time, but that doesn't mean it's not our game plan. If pressing is our game plan and we have 3 players in midfield not putting their shift in, we would arguably be better off with 3 lesser players who actually did the job asked of them, as the team would benefit more from their consistent contribution rather than the odd moment of class which may or may not result in us scoring more goals than we concede in any given week.

It will take time for that ethos to seep through to first team level, and it will certainly need almost a full turnover of the current first team squad before it gains traction.

Holistic was a good term to use last season when playing mostly fantastic football and breaking the premier league goal scoring record . The term I would use for this season however would be fucking embarrassing shambles !
