Last night, palace fans kept hold of the ball and threw it around the stands to wast time, when Oliver asked for a new ball, they waited for the 2nd ball to arrive and then threw the ball back on the pitch. At which point Speroni, ambles over and pretends to try as hard as he can to kick the ball to the dug out by gently cushioning the ball towards the by line. Palace then decide once the ball is off the pitch that they will make a sub, the player is obviously the furthest player from the bench as he knew he was coming off and went over the opposite side to waste more time. He then pretends he is trying to jog of the pitch by almost running on the spot in an attempt to create an optical illusion that he is going fast because his legs are moving. OK lets play, Speroni, still stood over the ball, decides to wave his arms around and position players before taking his time to walk back and take his run up to take the kick.

So, all that went on, plus time wasting at every opportunity, even kicking the ball away when it was our freekick, which went unpunished. 2 goals scored (including what seemed like the palace 30 minute celebration) Plus 6 substitutions and all we got was 4 mins of time added on!! HOW?

It seems to me that the rules we need to apply (as mentioned by piccs recently) is one to negate the time wasting and play acting. Stop the clock, let them roll around forever, it wont make any difference.

I said at the time that 4 minutes was a joke considering the goals. subs and general time wasting which added to the usual 3 minutes given in a nothing match should have made maybe 6 minutes.Not that it would have mattered.

The ref did speak with Speroni didn't he but that made no difference as he carried on being as slow as possible for the rest of the game without it bothering Oliver at all.Plus the rule about how long a keeper can hold a ball is no longer applied is it. Is it 9 seconds? Very often keepers take more like 20 plus the old nonsense when they take a very easy catch and then somehow fall/dive to the floor as if it was impossible to stay on your feet.

All part of the routine cheating that goes on in every game we watch.

What worrys me more is the 300 passes we try to make with a minute to go. Was screaming at them to shell it forward. We had come up against a brick wall all night but continued with our slow passing sideways. Sometimes you just need to go route one and see what happens.

What happens is we carve out a decent chance and Silva fires it against Speroni's shoulder.

just like diving. spectators hate it but it works because the refs get duped. not going anywhere unless something drastic is proposed.

Agree, we are too slow with our own approach. This is not just the passing sideways, it with every part of our play from throw ins to free kicks. I was watching Madrid last night and from the second half onwards there was a feel of real urgency that they needed a goal. You just don't see that urgency from us.

As for the opposition time wasting, its part of the game. If we were palace we would do the same. My Sunday league team does it and always will. Its up to us to combat it by showing urgency and perhaps not playing as shite in the first place !

He's a real sharp shooter our Dave is.

Theoretically, there is nothing at all to stop a study calculating the average time a ball is in play over the course of 50,000 games, then rounding the answer to the nearest 10 minutes and change the rules so the clock moves only when the ball is in play.

Until recently, the argument against something like stopping the clock would have been that it's not practical in lower leagues and amateur football as the players and spectators would have no means to know how long was left. Eg, it's not a globally practical rule. However the introduction of goal line technology suggests authorities are looking at ways to improve the game, so it shouldn't be ruled out.

On a practical level, if you remove the reward for time wasting, there is absolutely no need to do it - although I expect we would then see other forms of time wasting like running into corners occur much more frequently, and at a lower level is the risk of bent refs extending a game to the benefit of a team with nobody really being able to spot it or argue.

It works in rugby, basketball, gridiron etc, because there is no real concept of time wasting
