Proof that football stats can be completely meaningless.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... me=3261248Just to add; last season, when everyone was slaughtering Demichelis for being too slow v Chelsea (when he played midfield), he recorded one of the fastest sprint times in the game; faster than just about anybody bar perhaps one. Yet we all saw hazard leaving Zaba for dead.
Stats can be made to say what you want them to & are a guideline, not proof of anything .

Anyone fancy keeping up with Aguero over 10yds? But because we don't sit back and hit teams, therefore having space to run into, apparently he's slower than Jagielka. Ok then, let's swap him

Have to simply wonder about and question the methodology used to determine these "times." Would be nice if we knew this information.
Was this with the ball at their feet or without? What was the distance which they ran at this pace? The individual who can hit this pace for one 10th of a second doesn't necessarily translate into the player with the greatest pace who can run 40 yards fastest. Also, who is collecting the data for each player as well?
One could go on and on...
I don't believe such stats are meaningless if they are collected in a manner that is as objective as possible, but we have little idea of their value from the limited information they are presenting us with, leaving its value difficult to assess.

I don't think any of us need stats to know who are the fast players and who aren't. Stats like this just prove how flawed the use of 'data' can be and it shows that treating anything presented with accompanying stats as gospel is just as potentially naive as trusting your mate down the pub.
I remember a stat saying Hernandez for United was the fastest player in the world or something. Fucking hilarious bullshit.

Regarding statistics I read an interesting article saying that according to all the normal parameters and key numbers that teams should strive for to be successful, Brazil should have beaten Germany hands down in the WC final.

Shame they met Germany in the semis then really isn't.

Half a bottle of wine and my memory goes down the drain. I blame old age. Still, the point stands.

Aye. Amusing though innit... stats say Brazil should beat them. They get stuffed 7-1... cos people aren't robots I guess.
