Goalkeepers

Watching the FA Cup semi and after an unconvincing save I noticed its Sczescny between the sticks. He has never impressed me, and that Ospina bloke who is his replacement is even worse. That got me thinking that there for example one top club who has had goalkeeper issues for the past ten years..

Hart gets his fair share of criticism and at times, rightly so.

So, who are the keepers you rate and/or if we needed to replace Joe, who would you sign to replace him? (apart from Neuer, who is out of this world)

The problem is there is no one good enough who is feasible to approach to replace hart. Chelsea got lucky with their keeper, loaning him out and he turned out to be class while having chec.

Degay was awful at first and we all laughed how shit he was and how great hart was... Now look.

Short term maybe we should get chec and cash in on joe.

To be fair with De Gayer I've never actually seen him pull off many world class saves. They're usually just hit right at him. I wouldn't say he's class now.

Quite doubtful we sell Hart at this point in time. He's dedicated to the club, and is homegrown. His weaknesses are not the main reason we are having our problems.

Chech would be nice, but don't think he'll come to us.

Me neither mate, Joe is going nowhere.

But seeing there is loads of criticism towards him, I'm interested seeing who are the keepers posters here rate and who would be their realistic replacement

I don't know whether he's that good or not, because of the reasons you have given. I do think he would struggle if teams loaded in front of him & put set pieces in, but since the rag myth gathered pace, teams have stopped doing it. The same theory means most strikers shit their pants & kick the ball straight at him.

Gunn had an exceptional game for City the other night but few of his saves were great due to shite finishing. Malaga pkayer just hit one into the stand from 10 yards because he's playing at Real Madrid.

Really hard one to judge imo.

Hart's had a pretty good season IMO. A couple of outstanding performances away at Bayern and against Barca spring to mind. How bad do you think his distribution is though Ted? Much criticised on this forum.

I think his distribution is fucking awful but I think he's done alright as a goalkeeper. But goalkeeper is absolutely not my area at all.

Gunn's distribution was fantastic the other night imo, but that only comes from the kind of coaching City have, where you are allowed to try every possible angle to not kick the ball long, & if you get it wrong and the oppo score, you won't be dropped or crucified because of it. Hart will have been taught to 'get rid'. English coaching.

Trouble is distribution is very important for a top goalkeeper when playing for a team where it's a cardinal sin to give away possession and where quick breaks are crucial against packed defences. Part of its players offering themselves quickly when the keeper has ball in hand and part of its awareness by the keeper and technique to find them with throw or foot without at all costs taking silly risks. Can't the fucking coaches improve him?

They have improved him imo. But it's polishing a turd.

When Hughes sent him off to Birmingham, I recon it didn't just have the effect of helping Hart, it also helped City to build the foundations of the kind of passing football we now play. Given was miles better at distribution. I think we were already planning for this kind of football way back then. But that's another thread.

I know fuck all about the finer points of keeping apart from what I've read & heard but if respected & experienced keeper watchers recon Gunn is better than Hart at the same age, then sooner or later there could be an evolution.

Begovic is loads better than hart and a keeper we can feasibly get - only sod is he is not English nor homegrown

I wonder what Dazby thinks. I'd be really interested to know actually. He'll have a good insight to this as he played for Australia didn't he?

Gone are the days of keepers just being there to stop the ball going in the net, keepers now have to be as good with the ball at there feet as an outfielder.

While at city I saw this first hand and had a few months of the coaching. City keepers have to be able to spray the ball about and be brave. They want you to take chances and clip balls into the no6 (DMF). Or clip it out to your 3 and 2 who have pushed on and got high and wide up the pitch.

The next generation of city keepers will be experts at this as its drilled in now as soon as they come. If they can't do all of the above they won't make the grade.

I spoke to a coach about the Munich game a couple of seasons ago when they played us off the park and he said Hart got mullered by the coaching staff for his performance that night and in particular his distribution. He persistently gave the ball away after we had worked hard to get it back or turned possession over by kicking it out of play. I think Pellers gave serious consideration to replacing him as he impacted on out style of play. Instead he was dropped and came back somewhat improved.

Everyone knows JH biggest problem is his distribution but if he hasn't got it now he is never going to have it. One of the best I have seen in recent times was Pepe Reina at Liverpool. Very surprised he was replaced IMO by an inferior keeper in Mignolet.

What does anyone think of Jan Oblak at Atletico Madrid ??

I haven't seen much of him but, with what very little I have seen, he doesn't seem too bad.

Mind you, goalkeepers aren't my strong point and the only player called Oblak who really sticks in my mind was the scintillating Yugoslavian forward, from the 1974 World Cup, who was called Branco Oblak.

I certainly don't think Joe is going anywhere in a hurry and I reckon we will just have to olive with his shite distribution. I found it interesting that keepers are seemingly encouraged to take chances. Joe doesn't seem to do anything like that. He does get the ball and often seems to be urgently looking for someone to give the ball to but then doesn't do it. Only to hoof the ball hopefully forward and usually into touch.

I am not sure Willy is a good enough number 2 but Pellers seems to think so thus I expect he will stay if Pellers does. Gunn is an interesting one as I think he is top class.I would easily have him in front of Richard Wright but what's the point of having him as a number 3 if he doesn't play. Maybe he should go on loan for a season and then come back to challenge Joe. He is serious quality imo.

Not sure on W.C but he is light years ahead of JHART on the ball, needs games or he is a waste of money and an ill thought out no 2

I think it was to do with Pepe wanting a move to Barca and not hiding the fact. Rodgers then got rid. That or his name was in one of his envelopes.
