NYCFC hooligans?

Postby mr_nool » Mon Aug 10, 2015 2:09 pm

I didn't think you had sport violence in North America (except for Canadian ice-hockey fans rioting to celebrate a play-off victory).
A bit ironic that these morons are probably trying to copy English football culture when the problem has (to a large extent) been eradicated in the UK.

It is not common but happens a couple of times a year. For the most part teams are spread out to far for fans to travel regularly for away games. As far as rioting goes when winning a championship it happens with all the major sports here including college (American) football, basketball and hockey. Most of the time even the fans of the losing team will riot.

University of Maryland is absolutely the worst for this ... riot when the lose, riot when they win. Not that it matters because College Park is a shithole town anyway.

It's never really been a case of supporters vs supporters though, more like supporters vs. the world. Destroying public property is a national past time in a way. I think it's spot on to say that distance has a lot to do with this, tensions never really get a chance to build up between "rivals." The New York teams are a little different I guess .. .except the Red Bulls are actually in New Jersey so it's not like they're walking the same streets together all the time.

I think this incident is more a result of people looking for an excuse to get into a fight, and this being the most convenient outlet at the time. Street fights and the like are not uncommon ... in broad daylight is a bit new, but oh well. I'm not too concerned about this. Sometimes people need a release, there's probably a lot more bullshit going on in their lives that is causing this frustration ... charge the ones you can, fine them or whatever and everyone will be on their way.

it's a joke. Just idiots being idiots trying to fill a role and history they don't have with something they think is genuine, but is the most plastic thing ever.

And no fans don't "always" riot after a championship, that's complete bullshit. It happens about 20% of the time across all 4 major sports plus college sports so i'd say when you average that out...once ever couple years there's a small fucking dustup of some drunk fucks lighting a cop car on fire or smashing some windows. Not ideal, but not exactly fucking Tottenham 2011 either.

We aren't all shooting and looting here in the US and A. Most of us are just busy at work and trying to get our knobs slobbed. And eat a nice meal. And get their kids to fucking listen.

cheers

I know what you're saying ... but I don't think it's born out of a plastic thing, trying to be genuine. It's just the easiest/recent excuse they have to lash out against whatever nameless frustrations they are carrying around. Throw alcohol into the mix and there you go.

Drunk idiots behaving like idiots isn't something that overly concerns me, and if someone wants to use this to paint all americans as "shooting and looting," they're opinion wouldn't matter very much to me either, as it's a ridiculous generalization.

It's not even a joke, it's a non-issue. Like you said, lots more important things to concentrate on. Are you passing out knob slobs by teh way?

Passing them out? I just got the first legit one from he missus in all of 2015 and its August. I can barely find one that isn't a grudge/bet/pityblow and we all know how those end up. I'm certainly not trying to paint all Americans as "shooting and looting", rather the opposite. I had never heard of sport violence in the US before (apart from aformentioned out of hand celebrations cum riots), which is why I was so surprised about this. The way they were chanting also made me think it was something they had adopted watching youtube compilations from European "soccer" brawls.

Would it be fair to say the East Coast is more likely to have a higher percentage of European ex-pats? I have no basis to make this on other than geographic closeness. Maybe some ex-pat 'traditions' could be creeping in for New York derbies.
