Post-derby:
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has vowed to stay at the club for as long as he is asked following his side's 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby.

The pressure has been on Rodgers in recent weeks with Liverpool now having won just once in their last nine games but the Northern Irishman insists he is not concerned.

"There's no pressure for me," he said. "My worry is always for the players and the team, that's all I'm concerned about. I think you saw the response today from the players, how they've been but it's no surprise to me because I work with them every day.

"They're a wonderful group, they're very honest. They work very hard and some of them are just in to a new club. You have to remember this a team that have lost four of the catalysts for this team so there is constant rebuilding going on, that takes time.

"Now whether that is me or someone else in the job, that will take time. I think you saw today that the players were 150% committed to what we're trying to do and I'm just disappointed for them that they couldn't get the win."

Rodgers believes that he is still the right man to lead Liverpool forward and hopes to remain at the club for 'a bit longer yet.'

"I just continue to work," he added. "I know there's pressure from outside, putting pressure on I suppose to sell papers, give the media something to speak about but there's nothing for me other than to work well every day and I will be here as long as I'm asked to be here.

"I think I can really help the club in terms of what they're trying to do and until they tell me otherwise I'll give everything to try and make the football club better.

"When the time comes for me not to be here, I'll accept that and I'll move on because it's an incredible club. It's a real wonderful football club to work for. I hope to be here for a bit longer yet."

Later on:
Brendan Rodgers has been sacked by Liverpool after their 1-1 draw with Everton in this afternoon's Merseyside derby.

The result left the Anfield club with just one win in their last nine games and that has brought his time there to an end.

I think I will genuinely light a candle in his honour. Shame he couldn't have spunked more cash up against the wall in January though.

Brilliant. Carragher, Souness and Henry now talking about how FSG are not interested in football, just about making money.

Thank fuck they've finally realised that they bought in on the cheap to make money from the global name. What FSG weren't prepared for was the actual costs they'd have to incur to take them back to the top, especially when Rogers basically wastes a couple of hundred million.

But why should he have to win against everton away to keep his job? The answer is, he didn't, the Dippers have already got their new man in place.

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss sacked by club

Liverpool have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers with immediate effect.

The Reds drew with Everton on Sunday to leave them 10th in the Premier League and six points off the top spot.

"Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch," said a club statement.

"The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner."

Rodgers, who took over in June 2012, led Liverpool to second place in the 2013-14 campaign, when they led the title race with three games to go but lost out to Manchester City.

The Northern Irishman was told of the decision by Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre and was informed within an hour of Sunday's game at Merseyside rivals Everton.

In a joint Fenway Sports Group statement, principal owner John W Henry, chairman Tom Werner and president Mike Gordon said: "We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment.

"All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game."

"Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it."
