Statement from Everton announcing the death of Howard Kendall:



"It is with great sadness that Everton Football Club has learned of the passing of Howard Kendall.

The most successful manager in the history of the Club and one of the greatest players to pull on the Everton jersey. He passed away in hospital in Southport this morning at the age of 69, surrounded by loved ones.

A full tribute will appear shortly.

The thoughts of everyone associated with the Club are with Howard’s family at this difficult time and it would be appreciated if everyone could respect their request for privacy."

Sorry to hear of his passing.

I remember his first Everton side with more affection than his City one, it made such a refreshing change from the red scouse being top dogs at the time, and played more fluid football than their neighbours. I hoped he would stay long enough with us to create something similar, but it wasn't to be. In his first season at Maine Road he concentrated on getting the defence sorted, which he did with that guy who followed him everywhere (Alan Harper?) acting as a sort of sweeper. It looked like he was trying to open up from that just before he left.

I can't remember him as a player, but by all accounts he was excellent. RIP.

Kendall is described very fondly by Paul Lake in the latter's autobiography. Bought his players beer when he thought he'd been too hard on them. Amongst other things. Rip

I was annoyed when he left us to go back there, but he effectively got us into the European places, unfortunately when there wasn't any. And his first Everton team were a good side.

Can't believe he was only 69. Haven't seen a picture of him in years, but thought he must have been about 60 when he was managing us, although I was a lot younger then, so everyone looked 60.

Was gutted when he left us to go back to Everton. I really thought we had turned a corner with him and were on the cusp of being a very decent outfit. Wasn't to be and a shame but you couldn't hold it against him. I remember at the time he said City was a love affair but Everton was a marriage

Brilliant manager for Everton in the 80's and for us during his too short stay. Ex Everton and City Joe Royle played a role in Kendall's coming by turning us down. Swales was certain Kendall would soon be the next England manager and had Royle as first choice. Royle later turned Everton down around a year later, so Everton gave the job to Kendall. Royle as we know went on to manage both Everton and City.

Very sad news about Kendall. He was my first City manager and I have very fond memories of his time in charge. I was so upset when he left us but I wouldn't hold it against them as he went back to Everton. I love Niall Quinn talking about the time that Kendall rang him up to welcome him to the club and he kept getting Quinn's answering machine..

But I do remember him shitting on us and rambling on about Everton being his wife.
