Am I right in thinking he is the only one of our home produced youth players of the last decade who we let go who has gone on to a solid career in the premiership , apart from Sturridge? Would the cognoscenti like Doug and the other lads knowledgeable on out youth have predicted this at the time?

Tyrone Mears played for Derby, West Ham, Burnley and Bolton in the Premier League. Kierion Trippier played for Burnley and was signed by Spurs this year. Ben Mee has a single season in the Premier League with Burnley but looks like he could have found work in the top flight after they were relegated.
Also Ireland, Onuoha, Richards and Schmeichel.

Sorry to be pedantic but it's been over a decade since Whelan left the club.
He has had a decent Prem career but being honest I've often questioned how, given how limited he is.

Not sure Whelan and Sturridge belong in the same bracket, with Sturridge actually having contributed a little bit for us. However, Wayne Hennessey and Kieren Westwood left us around the same time as Whelan having never played and they both have PL appearances, Hennessey actually approaching 100.

Don't forget Kasper Schmeichel. From the City academy, played for us in the Prem, and is now enjoying a good PL career. Is now first keeper for the Danish national side and is actually playing the keeper he (and Hart) benched in the Euro qualifier right now.

Jesus, what a clearance from Kallstrom.

We could actually have a an academy 11 that would survive in the premier league. I have done this before and it's been decent but something like:
Kasper
Trippier Richards Onouha Mee
wright-Phillips Barton Whelan Ireland
Guidetti Sturridge
That's not even including current academy or likes of Lopez, Boyata etc...there are more I'm forgetting...

None of these have had the steady success at a Prem club Glen has had. Barton and Shaun were established first teamers. I'm thinking more players who were let go as young players after the odd game cos they wouldn't make it. Tyrone Mears is a good call.Good to see Trippier at Spurs but he's second choice.Kasper has had 1.5 seasons in the prem.

Sturridge got more than the odd game but I get what you're saying. I think Kasper will have more than 1.5 seasons when he's done.

Trippier won't be second choice for long. He looks like one that got away to me. I like him a lot.
He may have to leave Spurs to get his chance but he can matter in a very good side I feel.
Cheers

Agreed. I would have had him over Zabba and Sagna last season. Luckily Sagna has now decided to be incredible, but he's no spring chicken and Zabs could well be past it already

Trippier wouldn't come back to City.

That's almost an entire team of relegation players. And a front two who both have horrific attitude problems.
Whelan is a thug who should have been banned for a season for his tackle on Javi Garcia, but because it was City, he just got booked.

I can't think of many clubs who would be able to make a similar claim, one notable exception aside.
If I was a parent of an aspiring pro footballer, I would be impressed by this - even if he wasn't good enough for city, I would be confident in the Club's ability to sufficiently educate my son so that he had a good chance of making a career for himself.
Best of both worlds.
