Retired via a column he wrote in the programme of the Ireland-Bosnia game, how did we miss this?

Sad really. Turned his career round after a shaky start and big kudos for that. Went on to make nearly 700 career appearances which for someone of his physique and size is no mean feat. City player of the year four times in a row is special as well. I really thought him and Richards would last a decade together as a partnership.

Good luck to him and his family in making a new life in France

"A head made out of solid granite"

I can vouch for that, once clashed heads with him playing schoolboy football, let's just say I was a little reluctant to challenge him for a header after that.

I was at a party in Liverpool just after he signed for us and there were 2 Everton season ticket holders I got talking to and they were gutted to lose him and said to me we had got ourselves a really good player. They were proved to be correct, an absolute City Stalwart and one of my favourite city players who saw us through some shitty days.
