Manchester City's new club crest has been released two days before it was meant to be unveiled after an image of the new design was found on the Intellectual Property Office's (IPO) website.

City have had three major badges since the 1930s and adopted the current design in 1997. However, following a consultation with their fans, the club opted to create a new, round badge that was more in the style of its two predecessors.

New York City FC and Melbourne City -- both part of the City Football Group along with Manchester City -- have round badges with similar lettering around distinctive logos in the centre.

City, who trademarked the new badge on Dec. 22 according to their website, have not commented on the leak.

The IPO handles patents, trademarks and other copyright administration within the British government.

I'm yet to be convinced by it. It's not poor by any means but nor is there a wow factor with it.

It's kind of bugging me. The shield is sticking out and the "City" is completely written in a straight line. Both Melbourne and NY have Football club written on their badges then, why don't we?

Not a fan of the shield sticking out either. It's a bit too "MLS franchise" for me. Also, anyone else feel that the navy is drowning out the sky blue?

I love it. I think it should be popular as it's basically designed on what the fans wanted.

I actually quite like NOT having the full Football club in there. MAUBE add FC to the bottom but that's just personal opinion.

Exactly!! Melbourne and New York may feel it necessary to say what sport they are as they have a lower profile in local markets where they are new names in minority sports. City need no such explanation, we are a global brand. Do Sainsburys need to put the word supermarket in their logo?

This just brings our badge closer to the "City" style badge that our owners sports on all the clubs it owns. History aside, our eagle/star badge has come through for old and new fans. And more importantly we have won in recent times sporting it. This rebranding does bring a bit of a foul smell to it...

I like it.
