Who do you think will get this ... ”award”?
In recent decades, many ok players got the world class status just because they had a few good moments. Who are your picks?
I am going with Beckham. His best moment as a footballer was scoring a last minute free kick in the movie Goal II.

He was the first that came to mind when I read the thread title.

Shrek. Starfish. Two that are good players, no doubt, but are not the world class status that they are both bandied with.
For me, world class means they would get into a squad of 23 if the world had a team. Neither Shrek nor starfish would be anywhere near that, so in that regard they get my vote for bring overrated

I thought Beckham was class too.
The year they won the treble, he seemed to be right behind everything they did.
A fucking idiot of a man though.

If the category was "good at free kicks" then I would agree

OT
Rooney is a definite, because no matter how good he actually was/is, the british media made sure everyone was told he was amazing, week in, week out.
As much ass I thought Scholes was class, the fawning over him in the last few years has me scratching my head. So all the best players of the last generation thought he was the best player they ever faced? Therefore he is the best player of the last generation...
My arse.

Always amazed how Emile Heskey managed to win 62 caps for England. His 7 goals have been bettered by Rene Higuita and Jose Chilavert, both of whom have 8 goals.
They are both goalkeepers

No doubting he could strike a ball. He won loads agreed.
I'm not one that reads too much into stats, but I'm sure that I read at the time, of that united team that a greater percentage of their goals (assists I suppose)
came from crosses from Denis Irwin than anyone else on that team. (I could be wrong, like I said, not great with stats)
Irwin could also take a decent freekick....you don't see his name being lauded the way Beckham's was.
Regarding Beckham being thick.... He and his missus did very well out of it. They concentrated on him as a brand long before anyone else in England and better than anyione else since. They marketed his reputation/looks/England international etc., and his reputation grew to far outperform his ability in my books.

Higuain - doesn't matter how much talent you have if you consistently fluff last minute, trophy winning chances
Phil Jones - hyped beyond belief as being a new age, super versatile player. Ends up about Championship level
Pretty much any younger rag who gets into the England squad after playing 2.5 senior games
Hulk - powerful shot but is all round wank and brain dead
Ali Dia was just about as overrated as you can get... Until he stepped onto the field
And let's throw in Yaya, Bony, Mangelers, Hart, Willy, Pellers, and Nasri to keep the resident boo boys happy
