Is Leicester the biggest success story ever? (With Poll)

Postby Wonderwall » Tue Mar 22, 2016 12:02 pm

They have been amazing and handled the pressurised big games without missing a beat. They do look like they are going to go and win the league and I hope they do. It will be an amazing story, but is it the biggest upset or shock ever?

Personally I think Cloughs Forest are going to run them close

76-77: Promotion to Division One (3rd in Div 2)
77-78: Winners Division One, Winners League Cup
78-79: Winners League Cup, Winners European Cup, Charity Shield Winners
79-80: Winners European Cup, Winners Uefa SuperCup

However, when you consider the level of teams against Leicester and the investment in those teams that they have beaten, I am unsure if I would pick Forest?

Yeah Liverpool were runners up, Everton 3rd and We were 4th, that put us in the UeFA cup the next season where we got to the 1/4 finals to be knocked out by the eventual winners Borussia Monchengladbach

I personally think that Leicester is by far the biggest, simply because of the financial climate we are in.
Taking nothing away from Cloughie and Forest, it was done in an era where the playing field was still reasonably level, as shown by Joe and Mal a few years before.
Leicester shouldn't have a hope in hell, which is why it's such an achievement.

Yeah I think it is. They play like champions. Solid at the back and capable of nicking a goal. They will run through brick walls for one another. We should maybe get our gutless lot to watch how they play for one another.

Look at Wes Morgan and Robert Huth. No where near the best CBs in this league, but fuck me I would take them in heart beat at city for the rest of the season. They just don't want to concede goals and I love that about the pair. They put our CBs to shame.

Wes Morgan was a joke for large parts of last season, massively out of his depth. But look at the turn around in him. I think sometimes you just get the balance spot on with CBs and Leicester have that with them two.

Leicester, the differences in money to splash on salaries are probably a lot larger now than when compared to then. I'm partial though, wasn't there to see it.

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

I agree with that. Coming from near relegation to being in with a serious shot at the title in the modern premier league is almost unbelievable.

I have gone for Forest as they had won the League cup as well and achieved that it without rotation. That cannot be matched in modern football.

Forest for me. Leicester haven't done it yet and u can't see them backing it up by winning 2 European cups either. I understand the financial aspect now but given the injury list that us, Arsenal and the scum have had, the money advantage has been largely negated.

Good point about Rotation, they only used 16 players to win the league, they were only allowed 1 sub too. Plus there were only English and scottish players in the squad

Is this even a debate?

Forest were promoted, then in the subsequent years won the league, 2 x league cup, 2 x European cup, super cup and were runners up in a couple of other trophies. They remained a successful top flight club for a couple of decades after. Yes, the money wasn't in the game there is now but that can be as much a hindrance as a benefit. They played more games back then with sometimes a couple of replays in cup competitions. One sub as well as has been mentioned and a smaller squad.

Not to denigrate from Leicester as what they have already achieved and they are likely to go on and win the PL is fantastic. But realistically, will they go on and win in Europe? No is the short answer.

They're all on drugs !

How else does it explain that useless cnut Huth having a great season. Crickey even Stoke let him go cos he couldn't mix it up anymore.

The question on the poll is who is the biggest surprise success story.
I think Leicester are most definitely the biggest surprise.
I cannot see them being as big a success though as Clough's Nottingham Forest. Clough's achievement was immense.
Football was diiferent than the money spinning business it is now, so I do think what Leicester are doing is fantastic and highly unlikely in the present game so fair play to them. But who can see them sustaining it next year in the CL ?.

Back in the seventies I also think what Bobby Robson did at Ipswich is very noteworthy.
Runners up a couple of times and an FACup and UEFA Cup. Rarely out of the top 6.

Forest in '78 winning the league was surely a huge surprise at the time. The dippers were nigh on invincible and were reigning league and Euro champions at the time. Plus Forest had only just scraped promotion, it's not as if they walked division 2 the season before

Perfectly true Notts. I thing the surprise now though, is how a team can do it in the present climate. We have money and can see how exclusive a club it is to try and break into. I think they will do it but won't be allowed blind side the regulars next year. They haven't done it yet but it is looking likely.
What Forest did was remarkable and a better achievement overall. Can't see Leicester keeping it going next year, but who knows? That would be truly remarkable.

Leicester's achievement is truly remarkable. It really is. Like you say, the resources available to their competitors makes their success all the more amazing. But they were a PL team and with a huge budget in comparison to that of a promoted side back in '78.
