I'll never understand why clubs do this.
Perhaps if you look at the Times report on him you might understand why .
Just read it and I still dont understand why.
I understand how good he is...but that's even more incentive for the club not to extend his contract (yet). You milk a few more years of a top-class CB on lower wages that he deserves; thats a good thing for the club. then you extend when he's got 1.5 yrs left on his deal. plus, you never know, maybe he gets a horrific injury and never recovers his form.
Waiting until a player has 1.5 years left on his contract is risky - they can always do a Milner. And milking your top performer might work for Spurs, but at the highest level of the sport where the margins are slim, return needs to be instant and a replacement of equivalent quality will cost you well north of 50m with the same wages on top and even then is not guaranteed to perform on the same level, you'd rather pony up another what, 5m a year at most? For arguably the best centre back in the league. No brainer.
If you want to stay at the top, you show your top player that he is valued appropriately. Otherwise Agüero, Silva et al are off to Barcelona or Madrid two years into their contracts and you're left scrapping for tickets to the Champions League again instead of challenging for every trophy under the blue moon.

Out until mid March with an ab injury. Maybe playing every important match this season finally caught up with him?

I asked the same thing, but what when I read this:
Laporte has every reason to be self-assured. Save for Virgil van Dijk, he has been the best centre half in the Premier League this season.
For that reason City have opened negotiations with Laporte over a new contract — one he is expected to sign — even though his present deal has four and a half years left to run. Even though Brahim Díaz, his best friend, left City for Real Madrid last month, he is happy where he is.
it would seem to mean one of two scenarios, or some combination of the two:
1) He, and/or his agent "kindly" hinted to the club that he is performing above expectations for the wages they initially signed him to, particularly compared to similar level players of his level in the PL at his position (probably compared to VVD's wages). He's clearly more of a proven player in the PL, outside of Spain, and in big games so those question marks were still there when we signed him despite all of the talent.
2) City wanting to ensure he is as happy as possible and to ensure lowering interest from other clubs as he is growing in stature as a player, knowing how reliant we are going to be on him in the coming seasons, and how hard it would to be to replace him want to keep him signed for as long as possible to wages he and his agent will be satisfied with.

Sheesh. Two nervy matches in a row for this guy after being incredible all season. Maybe it's just the way that Spurs play.
Should he start vs United or should Pep pull a Otamendi-Kompany pairing out for that big match?

If they play the lump Lukaku up front then Otter Vinnie. If it's Rashford then Aymeric -Stones.
I don't watch them so I don't know how they set up.
Attack the argument of the person, not the person of the argument- except Carl.

He has played a lot of football. Way more than any of the other CBs I would guess.

Everyone would be behind Kola id he was still there
Otter is still the best CB at the club. People will still say "he's rash" but the fact is he hasn't been all last season or this season. He's pure class

I think this centre half rotation is creating issues with understanding. Stones also made errors and those two were fantastic together before Stones got injured, I believe.
Laporte did make that one good recovery tackle, but we could have easily lost today and much of it was due to our difficulties defending teams who press and can counter as well as Spurs can with the talent they have.

I think we expected to be in a position to play partnerships based on opponents and vinny, stones and otter all got long term injuries or came back less than fully fit and the rotation never got up and running this season. It’s a shame as it should have been a key strength for us this season.
Tracking back is overrated.

Ok performance, but with a shady start.
He still looked affected after what happened on wednesday.
Imho, our defence was really shaking today, thank fuck Eddie was back at his very best. I could had been a very different outcome.

He wasn’t outstanding today. Far from it. Although he did get better towards the end of the game.
I don’t think he’s helped by the constant changing of the back 4 though.
In Pep’s first season with us he changed the back 4 every week. Last season he kept it more settled. But this season he again changes it every week.
For these last 5 games of the season he needs to pick a back 4 and stick with it.
