Its very rare that a right footer can play attacking left back very well. If Danilo is our second choice there it will get very messy. He can do a job defensively but when he gets forward it is very difificult for a player on his wrong side and can kill attacks. I will be surprised if pep doesnt get a back up left back. Id nick Robertson off hull from under neath the noses of the dippers, it would piss them off and as a back up left back he is fine, 8m is cheap too.

Clichy was right footed and has been our first choice for the past few years.

Naturally right footed but stronger on his left.

And to be fair he did say "play attacking left back very well".

Exactly. And clichy was very rare in that he was naturally right footed but worked so hard ok his left that his left was stronger than his right...granted from attacking sesne both were terrible but thats besides the point.

Denis irwin only one i can think of in premier league, you could argue milner i guess too.

£6m for a seasoned International with 400 or so career appearances when 17/18 year olds with less than a dozen games are hoping for £8m+? Sounds like a giveaway to me.

17/18 year olds have a resale value though.

At almost 32 Kolarov doesn't.

Is there any full backs that are Kolarov's age moving in this window that we can compare with?

His wages will probably be watering down the fee we can get somewhat.

Resale value, yes.

Experience, no.

Kolarov still has at least two good years left, possibly three in the slower paced Serie A. Given a choice of signing Kolarov say, for £8m and you know there is little resale value but you also know you will get a solid 35+ games a season from him for those three years and signing someone like Maffeo for example, who has potential resale value, but you don't know what you are getting for reliability or quality in the next couple of years whilst he matures as a footballer?

Most managers play the short term game. Thus the gamble is surely not on the old timer but on the young pup?

I wasn't referring to his "play attacking left back very well" comment. I was referring to the it could get messy having a right footer as our backup left back.

Clichy was right footed. The end.

In the spirit of reconciliation Mase, and briefly postponing 'the end', I offer you these observations from a nameless place

Greatest left backs of all time are right footed.. (Left-footers not trusted at RB?)
Discussion in 'Football Forum' started by Raees, Feb 1, 2015.

Nilton Santos, Paulo Maldini and Giacinto Fachetti are considered by most people as the top three left backs ever. They were all right footed... now in addition to those, there are others within the top 10 & 20 (roughly) ever - who also happen to be right footed.

These names include Paul Breitner, Karl-Heinze Schnellinger, Ruud Krol, Junior, Brehme, Lahm, Zanetti, Bossis, Zambrotta.

There are more greater right footed left backs than there are left footed left backs. It is crazily one-sided. Now the question I am asking here is why is this the case and why are left footed players never tried out on the right....

I don't think he was Mase and he was a centre back most of the time ;)
