CL Squad 16-17

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

CL Squad 16-17

Postby phips » Thu Aug 04, 2016 3:00 am

With the signing of 3 new Foreign players that will surely make our CL squad (Gundogan, Sane, & Nolito) how will we manage this?
Someone else smartly mentioned that when Gabriel comes in Jan 2017 he can take Nacho's foreign spot as Nacho will then qualify for the B squad list. But what of the the other 3?

do we really think we're selling 3 foreign players? sounds like the fullbacks are staying. I guess it could be Bony, Nasri, & Navas or a CB but it doesnt seem like people are interested in our rejects at the price we want.
I'm not really a City fan. I'm just here for attention.

Can I just point out that it isn't compulsory to sell players to leave them out of a CL squad.

Neither is it compulsory to use 25 players. No one ever does

Neither is it compulsory to drag up an 18 month old thread when a shiny new one would bring a bit more emphasis.

Trawled through a few old posts until I realised Clichy won't be axed for Boyata!

Phips man. Create a new thread. It won't clog up the board its relevant to this years champions league not last year's. All in one thread gets confusing reading it back having to look at dates.

Warrants a new thread not a year old one.

In fact its from 2014 when we could only have 21 man squad. Come on phips its totally irrelevant start a new one. Folks will only give you grief for this if you don't want that then don't bring up old and no longer relevant threads.

Here is our list of non-homegrown for CL purposes as it stands:

Caballero

Zaba
Sagna
Kolarov
Kompany
Otamendi
Mangala

Fernando
Fernandinho
Yaya
Gundogan

Silva
DeBruyne
Nasri
Zinchenko

Nolito
Sané
Navas

Aguero
Iheanacho
Bony

Bear in mind too that if we buy Stones then one of our association grown players will have to take one of the 17 non-homegrown spots so that leaves is in a situation where we've to either loan/sell 5 players before Sept. 1st.

Logically Willy will go but might get replaced by Rulli! A Kolarov move to Besiktas has collapsed/was never going to happen. Looks like Zaba's staying. Mangala will surely go on loan if Stones comes in. Surely a Premiership team will take Bony on loan at least. Zinchenko may have to accept he's not in the squad at his age. Doesn't add up to 5.

Players may opt to stay and take higher wages than move and take lower. That is their choice and they run the risk of not being in squads.

What's the rules on under-whatever in the CL? Is that all this A and B nonsense?

Under 21s can be added to the B list provided they have been eligible to play for the club for 2 years.

So for example, Denayer can be named on the B list and Zinchenko can't.

There is no limit on the number of players on B list.

Fair point about foreign players refusing moves. So the likes of Mangala Bony Kolarov might be left off the list if they refuse to be sold/loaned. I read somewhere that Pep has told Zabaleta he wants him to stay so he's apparently not in that category. I could have added Fernando to my list but I think we need him in the squad. We've only added Gundogan to central midfield and Yaya's probably off to the ACON in January. If Fernandinho gets injured Fernando is our go to reserve.

Might Pep use some in only the PL squad and some only in the CL squad? I mean, can Kompany be trusted for both squads, and what about Gundogun's return to full fitness. Perhaps 8 games in 4 months aren't enough, but they would at least be fresh. I'm guessing that players have to be in the PL squad to be eligible for the EFL Cup?

Maybe a new kid (Zinchenko) or some dead wooder we fail to shift (Mangala, Bony etc.) will be left off the CL squad, but I can't see rotation of proper first-teamers. I imagine Gundogan won't be named for the Play-Off, but should be back for the start of the group stage or thereabouts.

Obviously. I was only saying that because if that happens to, let's say, Nasri he will probably be whining all season to the press and his bad attitude could negatively affect the squad.

i was merely suggesting selling enough dead wood so you dont have to leave fit players off in order to avoid potential unrest. i mean, id guess the majority of the squad cares about the CL more than the PL (fans might not but players prob do).

Of course it would, there was reports of friction within the dressing room over the decision to leave Jovetic out of the CL squad when we signed Bony.

In terms of PL squad we still have one non-homegrown too many ( under21s don't need to be included regardless of how long they're at the club )so one will definitely have to leave or just sit idle for 4 months until the next window opens.

Yeah I tried to cut out all the crap rather than type out all the names, but obviously it's not ideal. neither is it easy to find on UEFA website.

Bony, Nasri and Mangala are obviously out the door before long. On the plus side Ota is in, so it cant be a serious leg break.
