How many goals

Five games in and fifteen goals already.

We have at least 48 games in the season,
38 PL
8 CL
1 in FA cup and 1 in EFL cup.

This may rise up to a possible 65 games,
38 PL
15 CL
6 FA cup and 6 EFL cup

How many goals in the PL and in total does anyone think we will achieve? I think we may get close to the 100 in PL again and top 150 again in all competitions. This season should rival Pellegrini's first season for goals. Once we start to gel and get to fill match fitness and sharpness I think we will blow a lot of teams out of the water and in some style.

96 PL and 155 in total is my guess

All things being equal, I think we'll top our best under Pellegrini, so I'll go for 160+.

I mentioned in a thread just before the PL season started there was an amazing bet out there .......

Manchester City to score 100 or more Premier League goals @ 66/1

Unreal bet for sure but so much depends on Aguero staying fit etc .

I don't know about the Cup competitions but in pre-Premier League days, I used to reckon that any side which consistently scored an average of two goals per game (i.e. 84 goals) would be in with a fair chance of winning the title at the final 'run-instage (in 1967/68, City scored 86 goals if my memory serves me correctly).

Since 1992 when, according to rag calendars, proper football started, I've often thought that a consistent average of 2.25 goals per game would mean that a team would/should be in the final mix as this would yield about 85 League goals.

I'm not sure that, given the players we have at the moment and over a long season, we could manage to score 80+ goals as there would be a big responsibility upon Aguero's shoulders to help achieve this and he always seems to be, worryingly, one tackle away from injury.

A heck of a lot of goals would have to be provided by the rest of the team in support, which is asking a lot, but, whereas in Pellegrini's squad there was Aguero, Negredo and Dzeko for starters, plus Yaya and then the defence chipping in with a few, in our current side we only have Nacho as back-up and I feel we'll fall short of the theoretical 85 goals needed to be there or thereabouts in the final stages of the season.

Statistically speaking, I feel we need another 20+ goals a season striker to ensure we have a good chance of winning the title and I don't know where he will come from, especially at this late stage in the transfer window. I know we're scoring a few at the moment but it's a long season and we can't guarantee this will continue throughout.

On that basis - and to partly answer the question posed - in the League I think we might only score roughly between 60 and 70 goals. I wouldn't want to speculate about any/all of the Cup competitions.

Apologies for the apparent pessimism and I hope I'm so very very wrong and misguided.

You think we're going to score less under Guardiola than we did under Pellegrini for the past two seasons? That doesn't just seem pessimistic mate, it seems bonkers but time will tell I guess.

200 in the PL, with the next 10 of them coming in our next game.

I suppose I am being a bit 'bonkers' but I honestly feel the irony is that we're only a striker short of going crazy in the league and blowing away all the opposition - always provided that Aguero can also stay fit as well.

I like your optimism LOL

But i'd rather be a little more realistic and that would be to take the record of Chelski, so lets say 105 PL goals

Wonder what the odds are for us scoring at least 1 goal in every game this season. Extremely unlikely, but we have a better chance this year than any I can remember

I think you need to rethink your maths a bit there - taking your lower estimate, you think we're only going to manage 1.46 goals per game throughout the rest of the season? That kind of form over the course of an entire season has not seen a team finish in the Top 4 since Everton in 2004-05, and has only seen 3 teams finish in the Top 4 since the PL was reduced to 20 teams (Liverpool in 99-00 and Villa in 95-96, in addition to Everton). So essentially you're expecting us to perform like a team that should finish somewhere between 5th and 8th for the remainder of the season, and it's not even September yet...

Interesting post; but what point are you trying to make ??

Seriously though, with all joking aside, I'm just worried that we're going to consistently play some nice football but fail to put all our chances away, being light in the striker Department.

I'm probably being overly pessimistic (and we might have opportunities to rectify matters in the January transfer window) and I hope I'm massively wrong about this but I just don't want to get carried away at this point in time.....and there's always someone who spoils the party.

Well Mik, we are currently averaging 3 a game and we all agree we haven't hit our stride yet. We should have put a few more away.
An average of 2.5 gets us 95 doesn't it.
I genuinely think we are capable of that. A lot can happen of course, over a season, but the signs are encouraging that Nolito and Raheem will chip in double figures. God knows what Nacho is capable of. I'm optimistic that Silva will get close to 10 this year and Fern 1, Delph and KDB will chip in when he starts firing on all cylinders.
Then we have the unknown of Sane, Jesus and Gunga-din.
Hell, Bravo may even get a few.

True things could all go pear shaped, but I'm feeling quite optimistic at the moment.

You're welcome.

I get the fear, we are taking something of a gamble going with just Aguero and Kelechi but when you consider what they're both capable of it's reassuring. Aguero is currently on a run of 11 goals in his last 10 league games. Kelechi I think ended last season as the most prolific striker in Europe.

I think the likes of DeBruyne, Nolito, Sterling are capable of hitting double figures too. Excited to see what Sane and Jesus bring to the mix too.
