He didn't lose an appeal. He was turned down over the right to appeal in the first instance. Then after his release he asked for a right to appeal again, in a large part due to 'new evidence' (the thing that Mase insists was a series of Facebook messages from her saying how she was going to strike it rich, which was in reality two or three men - seemingly paid off by Evans's girlfriend - acting as character witnesses regarding the girl's previous sexual conduct), which was granted. He then won that appeal to have his conviction overturned. That led to a retrial.

So it went as follows:
Trial > Guilty (Jury)
Request for an appeal > Denied (Panel of judges)
Request for an appeal > Granted (Panel of judges)
Appeal > Conviction overturned + Retrial (Panel of judges)
Retrial > Not guilty (Jury)

I think scouts at that time (and also nowadays lower down the leagues) would have worked with a select group of clubs - I know where I grew up players were continuously picked up by Leeds, Aston Villa, Derby and Oxford, because those were the clubs with connections to coaches that covered the town. I don't know enough about what happened behind the scenes to say whether it's something that can be seen to be a club's 'fault' (although it definitely seems Crewe could have done more than they did), but it certainly isn't a good thing for City to be connected to, regardless of how much the club were or weren't aware of it.

I reported some pretty horrific homophobic abuse on Facebook the other day from the MCFC page in relation to the rainbow laces campaign, Facebook said it was fine. It was vile and Facebook just condon it by doing nothing about it. It gives people a voice to air really backwards hatful stuff.

It's a genuine question, I'm not trying to 'stir things up'. It's hard to come across as genuine over the internet but it has been something I've wondered since Elton John adopted his kid. The kid will grow up with same sex parents, and I'd imagine that most of Elton's friends and people the kid will grow up around will be homosexual. So will the kid not grow up that way?

There are generally believed to be a mix of genetic and environmental factors. However, growing up in a homosexual family is not believed to be one. Interestingly, one of the most famous environmental influences, regardless of culture, seems to be birth order, with the second or third son, especially if there is a daughter born after them, more likely to be gay.

There are many examples of gay couples producing heterosexual children and, of course, millions of examples of it happening the other way round. Why do we like anything that we do? Do we like a certain colour more than another because of nature or nurture? Do we prefer one type of music to another because of what we heard as a child? I don't know the answer to that question but what I would say is that you cannot force someone to 'like' something they don't. Like making me like the Rags.
