Buying a new defender

Is it a must for the transfer window?

Things with Vinnie are bad, as we all saw it. Call it bad luck, call it anyhow, are we ready to give more time?
I hoped that Tosin would step up after I saw this summer, but looks like he is not a choice for Pep (maybe that contract issues might be why).

So, should we go for another one? The prices will go up for anyone we will show interest in.

For myself PP, I'd be happy to 'muddle through' with what we've got for the rest of this season, if that enabled us to buy another striker, irrespective of the arrival of Jesus in January.

It's the usual boring mantra I always spout, but I feel we still need more goal power than what we currently have, or what we will have with our Brazilian recruit.

(PS In any event, we probably need about three new defenders, not just the one)

Don't see it happening. This time was nothing to do with muscles so really just bad luck as you said.

Who would be available anyway. The price would be sky high. Maybe someone on loan, but you're going to relegate Komps to the bench over a head injury?

I'm pretty much with Mikhail. Defence will be addressed in the summer and we have Jesus coming to enhance our attack.

I actually thought it was good defending he made sure the keeper was favourite for the ball got himself there to hold off the defender knowing he might take a whallop for it. I struggle to see the obvious replacement out there think there is a real shortage of quality defenders anywhere at present

I suppose the obvious candidate is Bonucci but he is hardly one for the future with him turning 30 next year. It is an area that needs addressing for next season though with two new centre halves, a right back and a left back a priority.

I suppose we could move Fernandhino into the back line and buy a midfielder to replace him in that area.

If that were a reasonable proposition, is Juan Mata wasted at the Swamp and could he do a useful job for us, to replace our Brazilian maestro ??

I really don't understand what is happening with Tosin, to be fair.

If I recall, he played with Swansea in the cup, with filth also (?) then nothing. I really liked what I saw in the summer from him, even if he fucked up a bit at time, but Otamendi and Mangala did that week in and week out. He showed promise which is something we usually do not hear coming from our kids (except Ian).

Are you trying to say that our kids don't show promise? Really?

As for Tosin, he's 19. How many other 19 year old centre halves are there in the league, let alone at the top of it? At 19, Stones was getting a move to Everton due to performances for Barnsley but wouldn't play for months.

I get where you are coming from re signing a striker even with the arrival of Jesus. We don't currently have a striker with an aerial presence that can offer something different. Dzeko didn't like coming off the bench but often proved very effective coming on late in the game when we needed something different (more direct). Giroud did it for Arsenal today and with pep liking to get the ball into wide areas a target man could be an option getting on the end of decent cross. He had Lewandowski at Bayern and I wonder if another former Bayern player could fit the bill in the form of Mario Mandzucic. Never played in the prem, getting on a bit so may settle for a cameo role. Just a thought.

Laporte will still be coming, not sure about Jan though, Bilbao will get the deal they want, as they always do.

I think they show promise, but someway on the line, something happens. Look at Denayer.

For example, everytime I saw Maffeo, I was very impressed by him. I am sure he can play without any trouble when he is in need. I am glad that Garcia made the step and had a few chances.

For me, I think for a youngster it is make it or break it. I understand that the pressure in football today is huge and all comes down to money from sponsors, but with 15 minutes from time to time, kids will not break into the team. Ian did it because, well, he will be one of the best strikers in the world in the next 5 years.

When our wing backs were injured, Angelino or Maffeo were the logical option to step up, but instead, Pep used Clichy or the right or Sagna on the left. With Komps injured and Stones out, Tosin should had been around the team yesterday.

Make it or break it, mate, make it or break it.

Bottom line is we will need 3 within the next year. A CB, LB and a RB.

I'd like to think there's a chance one of them might come out the academy, but either way we need all 3 in the very near future.

One thought on Vinny too, he's not hopeless when he does get on the pitch, worst case scenario would he not be the best 4th CB any club has ever had. Less pressure on him and we get to keep a club legend and work towards his next job within the club hopefully.

Virgil Van Dyk for me, looks to be turning into a top player.

Sssshhhh,

If Liverpuddle get wind of this, they'll be snapping him in January and whisking him off to Klanfield quicker than you can say "Klipperty Klopp".

After all, Southampton are their acknowledged feeder club, judging by recent transfer events.
