Likely Champions League last 16 opponents

Postby Wonderwall » Thu Nov 24, 2016 11:44 am

Group A top team likely to be PSG
Q PSG
Q Arsenal

Group B 1 from
Napoli
Benfica
Besiktas

Group C
Q 1st Barcelona
Q 2nd City

Group D
Q 1st Atletico
Q 2nd Bayern

Group E
Q 1st Monaco
Q 2nd Leverkusen

Group F could be any of the two for top spot
Q Dortmund (13 points)
Q Real Madrid (11 points)

Group G
Q 1st Leicester
Q 2nd Porto or Copenhagen

Group H
Q Juventus
Sevilla or Lyon can still qualify – Sevilla need to avoid defeat by 2 goals away to Lyon in next game to go through. If Sevilla win and Juve don’t then Sevilla will top the group.

So the likely scenario is we will be facing the draw against one of the following sides
PSG
Napoli/Benfica/Besiktas
Atletico
Monaco
Dortmund/Real Madrid – This is where I would put my money on us being drawn out of the bowl against
Juventus/Sevilla
Cannot be drawn against Leicester or Barcelona

Atleti and Dortmund are probably the teams whose brand of football we will have the most difficulty with. Real is still a class above us, I believe.
I'm hoping for one of Napoli/Benfica/Besiktas, but really, I would be happy with any team bar the three I mentioned above.

We are getting Dortmund/Real or Atletico. Or maybe they will want us and PSG.

UEFA will be ready for us, no doubt.

Group D winners, I believe.

If UEFA thought it was in their interests and they could get away with it, they might even go so far as temporarily re-jigging their 'rules' so that we, 'mirabile dictu', were drawn against Barcelona. I wouldn't put anything past that corrupt gang of rancid crooks.

However they go about it, UEFA will ensure we certainly won't get past the next round.

no reason for optimism but i think we could finally luck out and get either Monaco or the Group B winner

There are less mega clubs winning their groups this time and we can't play Barca so I am going to try to be more hopeful about the draw.

We can't play Leicester, but PSG winning their group over Arsenal could actually help us because it means that not only would we have more possible draws, but so would the other runners up. If Arsenal top their group that means we have two less possible draws, therefore increasing the chance we get a tougher draw. If 2 English clubs and any bigger clubs are left in the draw and then it's us and any other 2nd seeded teams we automatically get stuck with the worse draws, where as if it's just Leicester as a top seed from England, other 2nd seeded teams could get the more difficult draws as well.

The negative I am describing I am almost certain has happened to us more than once in the past few seasons. Seems the longer we are in the draw the worse it becomes for us, usually.

I'm less worried about PSG than last season anyway even if they might want revenge. If we are at our best I believe we can defeat them again over 2 legs.

Atletico is interesting in that their league form is not so good so far this season, yet they won all of their games in the CL in a group with Bayern.

Something tells me we are going to get Juve.

We seem to get repeat draws. I think we will be beating PSG.

Gareth Bale out for 4 months after suffering dislocated ankle reports tonight , huge blow for Real Madrid . Only team I would be worried about is Atletico but at the end of the day we get who we get plus huge not having to face Barca or Bayern yet , this really opens things up a tad for me .

Couldn't give a monkeys who we draw. Said it before that the CL is of secondary importance to myself. I also appreciate that it is the clubs and probably Peps primary target. We will get who we get. I also don't hold much sway into the theory that UEFA want to pair us with the best sides. Can't imagine the chief execs of Madrid or Barca or Bayern or PSG wanting to draw us. And as UEFA are effectively run by these people I find it hard to believe they would actively fix it for us to be drawn together.

This isn't to say I don't think UEFA are not corrupt. They along with FIFA are extremely corrupt and are not fit for purpose. You only have to look at the match officials and some of the decisions they make. Or the layout of the CL and the seedings and the proposed new format giving larger sway to past winners.

That said, I think we are good enough both in playing personnel and the coaching and tactics to beat whoever we are drawn against and though the PL is more important to me I shall cheer the boys on regardless

Monaco would be ideal.

Bring them on!

At this point in our transition the CL has actually been a distraction, not allowing Pep to really get into the players and adapt our tactics and formation. We now concentrate on the league and I feel that by the next time we have to compete in the CL it will be a very different approach.
