micheal owen was a tad younger when he claimed a regular place for the dippers
add to the fact that players were no where near as protected as they are now 20 years ago...
we need to blood him, slowly. pointless playing in te waste of time eds league

Owen also burnt out in his late 20's, as did Rooney who started regularly at a similar age.

Is there a difference between offering a one in generation talent a few selected chances and start him for 60 games in a row?

In all fairness EN, Foden is a different kind of player to those two.

Owen's main asset was his pace and when that went, he didn't have much left to fall back on.

Shrek was renowned for his work rate and now that he's clappped out in that respect, especially with his weight problems, his effectiveness is fading.

Foden is blessed with pure skill. He could be reduced to a walking pace and his skill would be still there. He has a far more complete basis to fall back on when he reaches 30, whilst Shrek and Owen were never complete players from the start.

I don't think Foden burning out is a valid concern.

Given that Foden is 17, and will hopefully play for us till his mid-thirties, I can see this being a mega thread.

Just no cakes, okay Phil?

That is exactly it. We need to take it slowly. But I am sure they will anyway its not that there is an immediate need to jump the gun.

Football is a business nowadays more than it ever has been.
It is very much a results business but it very much revolves around making money at the very highest level.
I don’t think anyone here is advocating throwing the lad in the deep end in the PL, especially when we have talented people in the squad, perhaps in their prime.

However I don’t think the marketing and good PR of a young local lad having come through the ranks, making the England team and having been pivotal in its success should be underestimated.
Let’s not forget Latibeaudierre captaining his country to victory either.

Foden earned the plaudits world wide that up until now only City fans have been harping on about.

The kid didn’t look out of place in The preseason games.
Integrate him slowly into the first team. Get him a debut in the PL.
I think the advertisement for the academy’s philosophy actually working, alone would be worth it weight in gold, in the media.

It could genuinely be the start of a new era in City’s relationship with the media.
Stick with me.
If we actually believe there is a media bias, then what a removal of this bias could do for us, on establishing an even playing field for us, could also be worth its weight.

Perhaps I’m overstating things, but get him some minutes in the cups and debut him in the PL in a game that’s well won. I think the rewards outweigh any risks.

should be very obvious, isn't it?.
and neither particularly new in the football history of several major footballing countries.

I start thinking it's more about a cultural problem: some folks really cannot come along with the idea that talent must be encouraged and nurtured. because we must be all equals, career advancements must be strictly taken on age progression only.

it's a sad, almost centennial old story, which has infected most part of the world.

He’s 17, he isn’t a man yet and hasn’t finished growing. To put PL 1st team strains and stress on a growing boys body causes injuries. Bones and muscles aren’t lined up yet. So for his own good, throwing him straight into the first team isnt an option.

However if talent is ever to be rewarded and promoted surely this is the player and this is the time.

So we are left with a compromise, get 15, 20 mins at the end of games, build it up to 30, start some cup games and come off after 60 for the short term.

He’s got to be protected and nurtured until he’s grown up.

Yes he does but if he's good enough he can play at times. A lot of issues are caused because a lot of these kids actually aren't good enough. Everton yesterday - Sir Joseph Barton was pontificating on TS this morning. Whilst slagging off Unsworth and Everton in general, he praised them for 'giving the kids a go' - notably Calvert-Lewin and Kenny.

Actually Kenny scored one of the worst OGs ever, whilst Calvert-Lewin doesn't look able to take a chance at all, despite running around a lot. Whilst admitting they may not currently have a choice - is it good to give them a go whilst you plummet down the league?

I think Foden is good enough.

Good point, we did similar with our late 80's crop of youngsters on our way back to the old 2nd division ... mind we were skinto then so had little choice

For anyone that has Instagram have a little look at Phil's profile. It will warm your heart.

By looking at the pictures you realise just how young he is and how much he is living the ultimate dream. You see pictures of him with his mates and playing for city and then you see him with Sergio like he's his best mate. My favourite one of him, is the one stood in his bedroom with his match worn shirts hung on a curtain rail. No posh cabinet just hung is his bedroom on a coat hanger.

I hope that his feet are kept firmly on the ground and he stays like he is with a good family behind him.

I hope he keeps his feet on the ground too - I was encouraged to hear he still goes fishing with his dad so fingers crossed.
