You could so he’s been played wide, but so has Mahrez..

Needs to improve imo.

He's a classic occasionally brilliant but often absolute shite player. Not too hot on the striker front - best off as a Mahrez sub out on the right.

About sums it up .

Imo a striker is there to score goals but some apologists will say “but he offers a lot elsewhere on the pitch””!

I said numerous times we can never ever rely on him to be a constant , if ever , Match winner .

In the time since he last scored, he's got 5 assists. Only 4 players in the PL have more than that all season. However, I agree that he will never be a consistent match winner, and would probably never get more than 15-18 league goals per season in our setup(s).

Pogba has the same amount of assists as him..

Yes, he's one of the four with more this season, if you only count the 5 assists since he last scored (the PL's site says Jesus has 7 assists, but Transfermarkt - which I tend to use because it's more navigable - says 8). I'm not saying assists are an indicator of a good player, rather that they're evidence that he offers things beside scoring goals.

Dont forget an assist could be a simple two yard pass 25 yards out to KDB who then smashes it in. Context is key

The reason for mentioning it is that Mahrez has now gone to ACoN and he’s our top scorer. We need someone to take over and get the goals and usually you’d rely on someone like Jesus, but my worry is he won’t be up to it.

The Afcon final is early Feb. Worst scenario is 2 league games missed, Chelsea and Southampton.
We have still got Grealish, Sterling, Foden as well as Jesus if we bank on Kev and Bernardo in midfield with Rodri.
Alternatively with Gundo in midfield Kev can play false 9.
Plenty of options, remember Chelsea are without the keeper against us and dippers are losing 2 of the worlds best front 3.

It definitely is. 20% of our goals have been assist-less according to the BBC, and the discrepancy between the PL and Transfermarkt stats for Jesus show how subjective an 'assist' is as a statistic. I remember back when Dzeko was playing for Wolfsburg, people in Bosnia & Herzegovina were raving over assist stats for various players, and I'd never heard of them as a metric at that time, nor could I find comparable stats for the Premier League. They were a big thing in Germany, though, and have been introduced to English football since.

It turns out you can gamble on them, though, so there must be a more objective way of defining them in real-time than I can understand. Otherwise people would be waiting days to see if they can collect winnings or not.

Worst case scenario is that he plays 7 games in 27 days, and comes back knackered.

Are Algeria any good and how far are they likely to progress does anyone know?

Hopefully they won’t get past any group stages and he comes home sooner rather than later

Incidentally whilst Mahrez is leading scorer in all comps he's 3rd in the PL behind Raz and Bernardo.

He’s also started less PL games than both players.

He's played 1 less than Sterling.
I'm not knocking Mahrez, i love the guy. I'm just pointing out that we've got plenty of options and our goals are nicely shared out as opposed to a dippers situation where they rely so heavily on Salah.

With meh gone to Africa just play sterling on the right and foden left.
We will hardly notice.
GJ on the right is a non starter at the moment. Absolute shite these last few games. And definitely not worth his place.

Indeed they do rely on Mane and Salad, 33 goals and 10 assists between them so far this season , 65% of their total goals between them.

Unbelievably there are supposedly five PL teams in for Coutinho. How brain dead or desperate are these clubs?

He’s a pretty good player for Newcastle, Leicester, Arsenal, West Ham and the rags level - which would be my bet on the interested teams. Horrifically condescending but hey ho

His salary alone should put everyone off. That's not even looking at how inconsistent he's been since the dippers.

I would just be happy in this window if we can get McAtee signed up. He looks a great prospect, and at least give him a run out on Friday
