It's not really surprising if you look at it from spuds point of view.
They've built a title challenging team for half the money that the other contenders have, and are looking to to increase their revenues to compete.
The last thing they need right now is for their squad to leave, and if they do, they are going to squeeze as much out of prospective purchasers as possible.
Plus they don't desperately need the money.
I don't much like spuds, but you can see where they're coming from.

Actually, purely with regard to the lyrics, that's one of the best of hymns, although it might not be that surprising for, as well as being a composer and a lyricist, Frances Jane Crosby was a poet as well (and a fine one at that).
