I remember him being distinctly rubbish.

At least he can cover the left back and defensive midfield positions as well.

Can't say I've ever seen him play but I'm sure if anyone is to get the best out of him it's Pep.

I find it intriguing that the idea that Brazilian defenders are actually worthwhile has shifted over the last 2-3 seasons. Previously they were derided for only attacking and being poor at defending. Now Luiz, Alex Sandro, & Danilo are moving for big fees (or being priced extremely high in Sandro's case) while Dani Alves and Marcelo were thought of as some of the best at their positions last year.

Most of those you named are mainly lauded for their offensive contributions still, as is good tradition with Brazilian fullbacks (Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Carlos Alberto, Djalma Santos, Nílton Santos, Maicon...)

Previously (3+ years ago) the likes of Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Miranda, Filipe Luis, Dante and further back Lucio and Juan were considered at the very least very solid defenders.

I don't see any shift at all in the past 2-3 years.

£70 million is too cheap for the rags , they only do £90 - £100 million deals for bang average players who are happy with mid table league football .
