2nd/3rd/4th place in the league

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

2nd/3rd/4th place in the league

Postby Saul Goodman » Thu Mar 09, 2017 9:11 pm

Aside from the obvious desire to want to finish as high as possible does it really matter where we finish between 2-4? Does the amount of money we receive from Tv rights etc change? Does the CL pot differ? And if 4th place in the premier league no longer has to qualify for the CL and goes straight to the group stage then 4th is the same as 2nd & 3rd..

Finish as high as you can. If you can't finish first then come second. If you can't get second, then third. Etc.

The prize money is higher the higher the PL position and of course there is prestige and bragging rights. I understand all the top 4 get automatic qualification for the CL group stage from next season so even if you are fourth you haven't got the banana skin of a qualifying round very early doors.

Maybe in Arsenals case finishing fourth every year has contributed to the complacency they have in going for the title. Winning is a habit and as such the team should always try to win every game even if the title is out of reach and fourth is guaranteed

If we finish 2nd then we'll have won more games than if we finish 4th.

I like seeing us win.

If The Rags get 5th but win the Europa League, is it an extra place in the CL or would 4th in the PL be sacrificed.

Extra place in CL. Spain had five entrants in the CL this season, the top 4 in la Liga plus Sevilla

Hence the opening part of my question.

Regarding the money, i swear i saw a graphic that had us getting more money from the league than Leicester last season even though they won and we finished 4th...

I thinks we should finish as high as the referees will allow us to finish.

The league money is allocated based on 3 criteria (I believe):
- League position
- Amount of times on TV
- Plus an equal share where all teams get the same

If I'm wrong happy to be corrected! But think that's how it has been done in recent years.

League positions count, not much but couple of million per position. The big money comes from TV money which is not directly related to league position.

Here it is not 100% sure about the source but the reliable sources look very similar:

That doesn't start until 2018-19.

Yep. But if Leicester win CL, and Rags win EL, assuming neither finishes in the Top 4, 4th place will miss out, as a maximum of 5 teams can enter from one league. It's worth noting here it's not league places + 1, but actually 5, if Italian teams that didn't finish in their Top 3 won the CL and EL, they'd get 5 places (3 league + 2 additional).

So then if we drop a few points and end up 3rd (as opposed to 2nd) then its not the end of the world and not worth getting irate. Good to know. As long as those points arent dropped vs United
