I don't know if I've missed this on here, but our U23s are entering the EFL Trophy (former Auto Windscreens Shield) this season.

We're in a group with Bradford, Rotherham and Chesterfield. We'll play one game at the Etihad (NOT Minihad), and the other two away. The first group game should be in the week commencing August 14th or 21st, from how I understand things

iirc, all Prem teams were offered to take part but only us and Spud's to them up on the offer.

The more competitive footie they get the better imo, not sure why the other 18 didn't bother?

I thought most did last year but this year us and Spurs have also joined. IIrc, United & Liverpool are two who still haven't.

I stand corrected JL, it would appear it is just dippers and rags not entering an academy team....

That's because all their academy players are first-teamers ;)

Any reason for this? Looks like Chelsea have all theirs away, too. Could it be because of European commitments and stadium/pitch duress?

From that web page...

Format changes to the competition this year has seen the selection criteria amended to allow greater flexibility for League One and Two clubs after criticisms and pointless fines last year, and each Group will continue to have one invited Academy side within it.

The invited under 23 sides must have six players under the age of 21 as of June 30 in each starting line up ahead of games.

Each Group will also be formed to minimise overall travel for clubs and fans.

The invited Academy sides will play all group games away from home and the competition remains regionalised until the Quarter Final stage - up from Round 2 last year.

There will also be greater flexibility in fixture dates to enable teams to play games outside of international weeks.
