Manchester City have the most valuable squad in world football, followed by Tottenham Hotspur, a new study commissioned by CIES Football Observatory has said.

Chelsea and Barcelona make up a field of four European clubs with squads valued at more than €1 billion (£883m).

City have four players considered to be worth more than €100m, with Kevin De Bruyne the most valuable at €145m.

Pep Guardiola's squad has a total transfer value of €1.2bn, with forwards Leroy Sane (€119.5m), Raheem Sterling (€118.2m) and Gabriel Jesus (€107m) among their highest-valued players.

Spurs, meanwhile, have players worth €1.17bn, with Harry Kane valued at €185.6m.

The valuation means the England striker, 23, is rated as the second most valuable player in the world behind Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar.

Kane's Spurs and England teammate Dele Alli is the third most valuable player in Europe at €181.7m, while Christian Eriksen (€104.9m) and Heung Son-Min (€67.5m) make up the Tottenham top four.

La Liga leaders Barcelona, whose squad has an overall valuation of €1.13bn, are third on the overall list of squad values, with Luis Suarez (€133.6m), their most valuable player. Lionel Messi, now 30, is worth €117.3m.

The valuations are determined by a number of factors, including performance of players and their clubs, international status, contract, age and position.

PSG, who signed Neymar from Barcelona for a world-record €222m in the summer, are eighth on the overall list.

Fourth-placed Chelsea are worth €1.04bn, while Manchester United, valued at €919m (£812.9m), are fifth.

The study ranked Romelu Lukaku (€165.3m) as more valuable than Suarez, Chelsea's most valuable player Eden Hazard or Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

How the deuce did Lukaku get himself such a high valuation, higher than any City player ??

Even after taking off my blue tinted spectacles, that's one seriously flawed estimation and throws doubt upon this entire 'opus'.

Who, apart from possibly the Scum, would contemplate paying a vast amount of money for such a technically insufficient performer ??

Not willing to underestimate Jamie's valuable contribution to the fight against Int.nal break boredom in the slightest, but it looks to me that ESPN have put up a blunter of SKY/FOX proportion, here.
Getting together MC, and others to surely follow, Lumpkaku worthier than any City, RM or Barca player, really ESPN?

Still, many thanks and appreciation to Jamie for posting yet another evidence of how far City have come to command a much well earned respect by the global audience, imho.

Well to be fair ESPN didn't come up with the value for Lukaku that was CIES Football Observatory.

yep, well in with fair correction , mate. ;)
tbh I never miss an opportunity to have a dig at the media, so I've chosen to "ignore" the original source, which btw, in my biased eyes is a tad much of a FIFA grey area to be trusted completely, despite well established reputation.

fair dos, tho.

All hypothetical guesswork by CIES Football Observatory at the end of the day despite their 'system'. I'm pretty sure someone would offer us over £100mil for Aguero and less for the 4 players mentioned. its all down to what a club are prepared to pay for a player. There is no doubt that we have paid above the 'market' rate for several of our main players at the time of purchase ... total bollox anylisis system to be honest, the World or FA cup draws will have more merit than this!

I'd guess that his length of contract, combined with the fact that he counts as Association Trained for English clubs in UEFA squad lists, pushes up his value, considering the criteria used.

Where's Pogba? - is he now not worth a Pogba? - how do we evaluate our own signings in relation to a Pogba? Do we have to use a new measurement and call it a Lukaku?

He's worth €145m according to this: http://www.football-observatory.com/-Ratings-eng-

You can search for individual players from the 'Big 5' leagues (I've never worked out why France is still included in this - they were ranked about 7th for a while, and although they're now 5th, they're closer to 9th than 4th in terms of ranking points, according to UEFA's calculations).

Indeedy. Almost every time you switch SkySports on you get some pratt ( usually Rob Wooton or Jim thing, god I can't stand those 2) spouting some stats garbage. What is it with the constant barrage of stats and usually meaningless ones at that! Does anyone really care?

The entire thing is transfer bollox porn.

We won't see any of those players sold for anything like that.

People are acting like the insanity of Neymar's story is going to "inflate" the market, but realistically only Barca would have thrown crazy money around cuz they got a fucking mint from Neymar himself.

In fact, transfer fees, i predict, will fall on average after the next, smaller, TV deal.

cheers

I prefer Turgenev's thought that "Falsehood is just as living as truth, if not more so" ('Diary of a superfluous Man', which title could relate to each of the two Sky cretins Mr H referred to).
